LPG cylinder conversion to Medical Oxygen storage cylinder?

Hello Everyone,

I don't know whether I am allowed to start a thread on this topic but owing to the desperate situation prevailing in some parts of the country and presence of some real technical heads here, I would like to take this chance. The possibility of any positive outcome even if it's very remote pushes me to ask this question.

As we all know that today our nation is battling with the acute shortage of medical oxygen, which is causing extreme hardships and large number of avoidable deaths of the covid patients. Sometimes whats happening is that oxygen cylinders are not available though oxygen is available for refilling .

My question is in such desperate scenario, is it practically feasible and scientifically possible to convert LPG gas cylinders for home into liquid medical oxygen storage and dispensing cylinders

For starters some obvious questions are:
1. Is lpg cylinder strong enough to store medical oxygen which is stored at 2000 psi in regular oxygen cylinders.
The answer is that LPG cylinders are made to withstand a pressure up to 2100 psi roughly.
2. How to remove the remnant lpg in an empty cylinder and make the cylinder safe for the storage and dispensation of oxygen.
3. If there are positive solutions to above two questions then the question arises as to how to dispense the oxygen in a regulated manner.

I believe there shall be many more critical questions so without much ado lets start the discussion.

Regards

Moderators; I couldn't decide where exactly i put this thread, so you are requested to transfer it to an appropriate category. Thanks

Mod Note : Please quote ONLY the relevant bits of a post. Quoting a full, long post inconveniences our mobile readers.

Thanks!

The LPG gas cylinder's maximum capacity to sustain pressure of upto 2100 psi may not be correct. I am not sure about the exact specifications. This could be much lower than the quoted figure and needs to be confirmed.

Certainly not. A few bits of information from what I know :

1. LPG cylinders are rated for a maximum working pressure of 1.66Mpa (refer attached picture) that translates to 16.9 kg/cm2g which also means 240psig. The actual operating pressure of this cylinder is much much lower and depends on the Propane-Butane mix inside

2. Oxygen service piping, valves, fittings have to be grease and oil free

In this rat race for oxygen, I only hope there are no incidents since oxygen has to be handled in strict accordance with defined safety procedures.
