Weird noise when turning the steering wheel

My Hyundai Grand i10 2015(15xxxkms) is having this wierd noise while turning the steering wheel. A.S.S. specified to be as Electric Power Steering motor needs to be replaced and the reason behind is that the car hasn't been driven much. The total cost would be around INR 6000.

BHPians can refer to this video.

re: Weird noise when turning the steering wheel

I had the 'next-gen i10 1.2' which was the predecessor to Grand i10 and it developed the exact same issue around 50k kms. A few trips to the HASS were made but the problem either did not reproduce there or was too feeble to be caught and taken seriously by the SA. All in all, it remained untraced and unresolved until I upgraded the vehicle around 98k kms. All the best to your case!

re: Weird noise when turning the steering wheel

Please get in written from HASS workshop that changing this will resolve the problem and then on getting that written go ahead and change that. In ageing cars I have experience of Hyundai SA recommending not fully thought of solutions at times ending up spending tons of money from customer, although 6K is a low estimate assuming this includes labour cost too. Get a quotation from a different Hyundai Service Center and if both of them you may want to go ahead.

I guess your car has a McPherson suspension. That noise sounds like the top bearing of the struts are making this noise. Try to take it out and grease if dry. You find it on top of the strut and it has to come off the car. If the noise goes away, you dont need to replace it. Replace only if you have missing or broken ball bearings.

If the steering is as light as before you got the noise, it cant be the servo unit.

Yes, 6K includes labour charges too. The other thing i want to mention is that the SA just sat in the car, turned the steering, heard the noise and confirmed me that EPS Motor needs to be replaced. Due to that i am skeptical regarding the SA's statement.

Steering is light, like how it has always been. It's just that wierd noise that can be heard while turning.

You can get someone to turn the steering while you cup the top of the top mount of the strut with your hand. You might be able to feel the uneven jerk through your hand.
It might be easier to feel if the engine is turned off. What you hear inside the car is not loud but it will be, the closer you get to the problem.

I get the same murmur sound when turning the steering wheel in my 2019 Elite i20 Asta (O). I got the struts and strut bearings replaced last week, but the sound is still there. As the steering is still light and is not giving any problem for now, I will wait for a few months before I go for steering motor {was it pump?) replacement.

Volkswagen vento steering noise issue

A clicking noise (tak tak tak ..) is being heard from steering wheel in my vw vento 2015 1.6 MPI , when i turn the steering wheel at stationary position or at very low speeds (after starting the car). The noise is more predominantly heard while steering the wheel towards right. The mechanics at VW service centre are unable to diagnose it. In the video , that noise could be heard more predominantly at time 1:01 onwards. The mechanics checked the clock spring and said the spring is fine and it could be a problem with steering coloumn . I would be really thankful if anyone could provide an accurate diagnosis.
I dont trust the service centre diagnosis.

I was unable to upload the youtube link in attachments , so i have pasted the youtube link here

It has been 3.5 years since the EPS motor was changed; everything is now operating smoothly and there is no noise.

Have you tried checking with other VW service centers? If they are unable to diagnose, you can consult with FNGs who are experienced with VAGs.

Do you also have some sticky feeling when driving at higher speeds ? If its steering column, it costs upwards of 30K to replace !
