Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

Agree with the posts regarding permissions. I had an awning installed in my erstwhile cloud kitchen as a shade from sunlight. It was a known fact in the establishments in the area that BBMP frowns upon such structures and only 'tolerates' retractable ones.

Also regardless of type of material, check what activities are carried out in the floors above. The day I first retracted my spanking new awning to all its glory, I was greeted by waste water thrown by an office above which then splashed on pedestrians. This was followed by empty packs of cigarettes, tetrapacks and chips wrappers which stayed put. Of course, if your neighbours are prone to such behaviour, better to have them hit your awning than your cars.

Wind is an important factor so if going for awning, choose a tougher material (many grades are available) and stronger brackets. If you want I can share the contact number of the guy who did the work for me. Decent chap, though every bit a salesman.

I tried googling "awning Bangalore" and got quite a number of hits with a decent amount of reviews. See which one suits you best.
On the side - Has anyone tried customizing and retrofitting these awnings onto their SUV for camping? It just might be a cheaper option than buying a 4x4 camper accessory.

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

I'm not sure if your society will allow you to put up something permanent or semi-permanent.

A much simpler solution but would need more physical work every day - buy a car cover and put in on the exposed half of the car!!

The polycarbonate or acrylic sheets are fine, but the noise during rain will be high and disturbing. It is recommended to go for puffed polycarbonate sheets with 30 or 50 mm thickness. The cost per square meter will come around 1,150/-.

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Here are the pictures. The first one shows that I need to cover an extension of ~5ft. The second picture to indicate the balcony height and possible support locations. The wind factor is definitely an issue and am wondering if the retractable awning structure will be able to manage given the size required. Somewhat closer to ~15ft x 5ft min.

Retractable type is not good for this size and roof sheet (type I posted above) may look bad for your requirement.
Search for tensile roof structure vendors in your locality. That is the best solution for this size, height, and appearance requirement. They can mount the structure on the wall itself.

Option -1 :
The height of the balcony is a concern and there is a chance of front elevation getting affected.

Red - Metal Frame
Yellow - Sheets
Green - RWH collection and discharge.

Due to the height of the balcony, there is a chance of a decrease in incoming light to your main entrance.

Option - 2
If the sheet is protruded directly from the balcony frame then the sheet has to be extended much longer to cover a larger area. This may be slightly risky during windy season.

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

Hey!
Do keep in mind the crosswinds. Considering the height, make sure you double the required length at the least. Awning is a good option and it sure makes the overall fascia look lighter than any rigid construction! I have got it done for my parking and its sturdy enough. It even managed to survive the recent storm here in Mumbai. From what I remember, the maximum retractable length is about 12', which suits your purpose for now I think!

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

My two cents, got a 3 feet metal sheet extension to protect both the car and the front door from harsh sunlight and rains, which serves its purpose, but the natural flow of air has been interrupted now since the height of the extension from the ground is around 10 feet.

So keep in mind the natural flow of air IMO into the house could get affected, if your house is east or west facing.

Something like this may be less obtrusive aesthetically, when the awning is retracted, and the society also may not object.

Sorry for the poor photo edits, but hope you get the idea. Basically create an individual parking cover for each car with 4 pillars supporting the top and an awning leaning out to cover the exposed parts. You can even use transparent plastic instead of the striped design.

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

Due to the height of the balcony and windy situation the option of a retractable awning looks a bit challenging. Besides what does one do when the rain water flows sideways, the awning will only stop the rain water from above. The best and most easy option is to use a waterproof rain car cover. The OP can use it to cover the rear trunk of the car. This is if there is no fear of a falling object.

It is appalling that most societies do not provide dedicated stilt or underground parking even today. Most builders get away without providing such amenities while buyers continue to shell out crores on buying such houses. Even the so called premium builders like Hiranandani (especially Powai), Raheja, etc. get away with it. I have even come across bungalows where the car is parked in the open or under a "temporary" jugaad shed. Maybe the concept of a fully covered dedicated parking space is taken for granted or has not caught up with our "chalta hai" attitude society. Any vehicle parked in the open is not going to last as long as the one parked in a dedicated fully covered parking space.

Re: Parking space too short - How to extend the protection for my cars?

Agree navin_v8. Not too worried to keep it completely dry right now, just prevent the primary rain from the top as the dust from the building gets washed down on the car (and prevent direct sunlight).

Its sad that such complexes do not provide proper parking or maybe as one neighbor told me that he does not have a problem as he sells his car's every 4-5 years.

Let me check with also the association on what is acceptable. If not, last ditch solution is the car cover - but am worried about the scratches quite frankly.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have a good idea on options now.

Seeking Urgent Help - Parking CSUV in a 7 Feet Tight Parking Space with Wall on both the sides

Dear All,
This is my first post in Team BHP. It is a privilege to be a part of this community. I urgently require your kind help. I have been living abroad for over 15+ years and was driving SUV's. I have recently moved back to India and i have to buy a new car. My biggest headache right now is the parking space. I have a very tight 7 feet parking space with wall on both the sides (I realized this blunder recently). I want to buy a CSUV - Brezza, Sonet/Venue. Kindly let me know if it is possible to park a CSUV and then be able to get in and out from the car. I called Maruti showroom and checked with them, however they were unable to give me an answer. My wife and daughter are against me buying small cars. If not CSUV, how about Baleno and other Sedan's.
Seeking kind guidance of all the senior members. Thank You.

Parking is possible, but getting out is almost impossible.

The three cars you mentioned are about 5'-6" wide which leaves you about 18" of space to play around with. Assuming you are skilled enough to park leaving 3-4" from the compound wall, you are left with 12-15" of space to for the door to open. If you consider the thickness of the door plus the door pad/arm rest combination you will probably have a few inches of clear space once the door opens.
