Faint thud noise coming from my brand new car on sharp bumps

Dear Bhpian’s
I am getting a strange and irritating noise from the front of my new Tata Harrier XZA Nov 21 make, when driving over sharp bumps. This issue is coming when driving a little fast over sharp bumps. The issue does not occur on softer bumps and if we pass the car at very low speed <5kmph
This occurred on my car straight out of the showroom on the delivery day. Since then my new car is lying at the Service Center and they are not able to figure out the issue. I escalated the matter and the plant team visited and they are saying it’s common noise but to be honest it’s a very irritating thud noise. Looks like they want to wash their hands off.
I suspected some loose sway bar bushings or strut mounts, engine mounts but the SC says they have checked it and could not locate the sound. The plant team visited and they are saying it’s common noise across some Harriers and saying it’s normal Just want to understand what are my options here? Did anyone face a similar issue on a new car?

re: Faint thud noise coming from my brand new car on sharp bumps

I think the Tata guys are indeed correct. Going fast over bumps will certainly produce a faint thud sound. I don't think there is anything unusual. If I were you I would take back the car immediately. In all likelihood, the car is merely parked in the workshop as is, since there is nothing to be worked on in a brand new car.

Why can’t new cars have issue? New bs4 harriers had engine A mount issue which made a thud sound on speed breakers. The company corrected it by changing the design of the A mounts. What I am looking for is the possible cause of khad khad noise on sharp bumps at speed between 5-10kmph. Just trying to find out possible causes

As you suggested, it could well be sway bar bushes.
Assuming its tightening torque was proper, what about inserting 'shims' in between bush od and bush clamp?
Alternatively it could be absorber link issue, but unlikely imho.

Take the vehicle to a reputed wheel alignment shop, ask them to test drive it and diagnose the issue. It may very well be some suspension bush or a loose steering rack.

Re: Faint thud noise coming from my brand new car on sharp bumps

If they are firm and confident about the normalcy of the sound, Ask them to produce the same sound in other cars and give in writing. In Parallel, write to Tatas and tell them that these dealers are spoiling Tatas reputation.

They are experts in making the comment "Sir, this is normal in all cars" without understanding the larger impact that it spoils the reputation of the manufacturing company.

I am not saying that TATA cars are perfect and fool proof in design. But making such comments when issue is specific to a car and not being able to identify the cause, is not acceptable.

Coming to the issue, it is mostly related to suspension bushes or related parts. Tatas are known to send the untested vehicles directly to customers. So, suggest to try to check the issue with other dealers. It's a small issue and should be solved easily.

The dealership agreed that the sound is coming when I test drove another vehicle and that absurd sound was not coming from the other vehicle.
Since then my brand new car is lying at the service center but they are not able to identify the issue.

I escalated to tata motors customer care and they assigned a regional customer care manager to look into my issue. When it crossed 7 days at the SC , I escalated to customer care head Dimple Mehta and Rajan Amba, after escalating, Yesterday Tata motors plant team visited from Pune and guess what, they after inspection said that the noise is normal, I was shocked that how can the technical team say that ,given the noise is very evident. Today I have asked them to go on a test drive with me and I will reproduce the issue in front of them, I have also asked them to show if similar noise exist on other vehicle, which I know do not exist, since I have already shown that to SC with another new vehicle.

I will also ask them to give that in writing and escalate to Shailesh chandra (PVBU) head

I am really frustrated why the quality check and PDI was not done before delivering the car.

As you suggested I will also try to show it outside to a seasoned mechanic as the entire SC and tata motors technical team looks incompetent to solve this issue

Final Update -6 Jan
Finally the problem was resolved
Events that transpired-
I was adamant to the Tata motors technical team that the noise is not normal. They tried to pass it under the carpet by showing another Harrier which had similar noise but I asked them to show me multiple cars from stockyard. I told them I will not relent on this and will get an independent report from an external reputed mechanic. I also asked them to give me in writing that this is a normal thud noise.

Finally after a day, I got a call from the regional manager who updated me that the issue was resolved
As per him after re torquing the suspension the problem was resolved.

Thanks to everyone from team bhp who explained me the possible issues and I was able to get this done, but yes it was a painful process and I now understand why people curse the TATA ASS so much.

Actually the suspension needs to be retorqued very often. Every time you do it the ride quality improves. Strange!

Hi, not sure if you received the required help. I am in a similar boat with respect to my Punch (2.5 years old and 14K kms), I am get the thud on concrete joints and change in tarmac. Ask SC to torque the suspension and also torque the engine mounts. This should help.
