I don't know about other fellow BHPians but I'm deeply saddened by seeing the lamentable condition of your i20, after all I do have an i20 CRDi too and it was my first car, I still remember everybody being fascinated by its expansive equipment list and some of those features were not even present in my then CEOs 3rd gen Honda City i-VTEC! This car is more of a true companion of mine than anything else, it was there with me when nobody else was, it protected me against harsh summers, incessant rains and bone-chilling winters, it had even saved my life once when I had a brutal accident and ambulance had never turned up, I just cannot express how much grateful I'm to my i20, even though I've progressed in life and now I have bought a new SUV I still love my i20 very much, so much so that I still don't allow any other person to touch it even, forget washing and driving. Yeah, nowadays I've decided to give it rest and use my new SUV for my everyday commutes, the i20 now leads a relaxed life and is enjoying its retirement life though its immaculately maintained and mechanically its absolutely fit and can very easily do triple digit speeds all day long without breaking a sweat.

I hope your i20 gets some much required attention, love and care from your side and I do advise to repair and retain her, they just don't make machines like this anymore.

Stay safe and happy motoring!

I want to look at pan cake batter that will come out during the oil change if you decide to do it.

Jokes apart, 60k is not much for this engine and should serve you for many more years. Since you are on tbhp now I am sure peer pressure will make you maintain the car better (way better).
Keep us apprised, curious to see how this transpires. All the best!

Perhaps it's time for this little car to get the much needed TLC it more or less deserves. It'll be great if you can document every single part being replaced/repaired for posterity.

Man, I see you loved your i20 dearly. I agree with the features part of it. It is indeed very well equipped. I assure you work is going on in full swing to ensure this beauty is brought back to its former glory. Glad to hear about your experience. Hope you didn't face anything too painful when you met with an accident.
Happy motoring to you too.

Haha yes. As mentioned, work is going on in full swing and I'm confident I will be able to maintain it well.

I think we have all the documents and service bills. Just have to fish them out from the bottom of the ocean. Cupboard, I mean.

Thanks

I actually meant if you can take photos and videos of the servicing being done, it will probably help someone!

Hey,
When was the engine oil last changed and at what kms? If it hasn't been changed in a really long time, please get it done.

Re: My abused 2012 Hyundai i20 CRDI

Well, I have a 8 1/2 year old 89000+ km run diesel Vista which has a service interval of 15000 kms and I still remember the service advisor telling me not to wait for that many kms and get the servicing (including engine oil replacement) done at 12000 kms tops. I tried to follow that but after I moved to Bangalore in 2015 my car was in the garage in Calcutta for most of 2015 and 2016 and I skipped the annual service in 2016 since the car had hardly run that year. Believe it or not, I actually got a call from my TASC in 2017 asking why the car had not been serviced in over a year! They said that I should get it serviced once a year irrespective of how many kms it had run.

I have followed that advice thereafter and since 2018 (when the running again started to go up) also reduced the service interval to 10000 kms of my own volition - I have realized that a little TLC goes a long way in keeping a car ship shape over the years.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that while you cannot change what has happened in the past, you can definitely course correct now that you know better. For starters, you should just get every fluid and filter replaced plus also check the other moving parts for wear and tear, especially belts and timing chain/belt. Also for the next few thousand kms, I would suggest that you change your engine oil once every 5000 kms to get rid of the accumulated gunk of 67000 kms.

The original i20 CRDi was a great car (it was in my consideration set at the time of buying the Vista but was dropped due to budget limitations) and with the right care, it will serve you well for many more years.

Re: My abused 2012 Hyundai i20 CRDI

Are you sure the oil has been replaced just once in all this years of ownership, i am quite shocked that the engine is still running.
You should replace each and every fluid immediately and specially for the engine oil atleast for the next couple of oil changes please replace at 5000 to 6000kms so that you can get all that sludge out. Don't use a engine flush it may block your oil strainer and cause multitude of issues.

Give the car a good service and she will serve you for many more years to come.

Update: All oils have been completely replaced! Apologies as I do not have any photos of the same.

Next stop, body shop!

Re: My abused 2012 Hyundai i20 CRDI

Update to the update:

The brake pads have been replaced and squeaky noise is gone. The radiator also needed to be changed because it was bashed by a stray stone I suppose. But we really have no idea how that might have happened.

Lastly, major improvement in terms of ride as front suspension arms have been replaced. The car does not pull to the left anymore. Two birds might have been killed with one stone.

Other minor things including replacement of bulbs and clock spring.

I will continue to post further updates as things roll by.
