I have a hunch it could be a damaged governor in the engine which caused the fuel supply to increase. Do get that checked out. Of course, the obvious culprit would be damaged injectors, but do also get the governor checked out.
Edit: I'm not sure if modern engines use governors anymore. In all probability the fuel flow is directly controlled by the ECU.
