Hello,

I am based in Pune and recently bought a pre-owned BMW and with few days of driving I got a message saying Transmission : Secure Vehicle with Parking Brake when Stationary. A quick check on google shows that this is a fairly known issue in BMW but quite a costly affair to fix. Apparently this is problem with gear shift assembly may cost a bomb if entire thing was to be replaced in service centre. Youtube videos talk about this being caused specifically by a broken spring but of course is a very involved process. I am putting this problem here to check if any one here has faced similar problem and what steps were taken to fix it.

What are the symptoms you are getting while driving? Is the vehicle jerking or not shifting to R/D? Open the bonnet and below the Left headlight is the transmission control unit. Check if there is rodent damage, could be one of the cause. Else unless you read the error codes cannot confirm what can be the issue. Alternatively, How old is the car and does it have service record at the dealer ship? you can push for replacement under goodwill.

Got the error scanned and here is what we got. Shiftlock Solenoid : Selector lever wrongly not parked in P.

Quick read on internet says it’s a problem with spring. It’s 2017 model and out of warranty.

Seems to be a fairly simple part that broke. Try contacting a local Bmw specialist like Mechanix and explain the situation after you share the video. Another route might be finding an experienced mechanic in your area and showing him what needs to be done after you order the part on a reputed seller or from the Bmw spares department. I got my steering wheel upgraded on my F30 by a non-bmw mechanic after he looked at a clip like the one below. If all fails, try reaching out to your dealer to get an estimated quote. Or maybe getting it done along with another major service at a discount if they are willing to negotiate. For what its worth, your X1 should be bulletproof and doesn't have any known major issues. First check if your battery is in order. Got similar (but not the same) errors from time to time - but the message would disappear after a while. Took it to the dealer and they found it was because the battery was not working and hence the iDrive indicators were giving errors. If you are getting an error but the car is running fine, this could be the problem
