2024 Mercedes GLE450d - Transparent bonnet feature not working in brand new car

Hi All,

I recently purchased a GLE450d, less than 3 months ago. The new GLC and GLE both have a feature called Transparent Bonnet - which uses the 36- degree cameras to show you what the road's like underneath the bonnet of the car- it's a nifty feature to use when going on a bad road or when parked in an unfamiliar location.

During the handover, the sales rep was not able to put on this feature when he clicked on Off Road mode and suggested that once we start moving the car, at a speed below 40km/h and then it will come on.

Unfortunately, it did not. The salesperson kept in touch and offered to bring a technical person over but our dates and timings haven't matched so far.

Mercedes anyway took my car for a routine inspection that they apparently do in the first few months. I highlighted this concern to the SA who has now gotten back to me with a vague response saying that it's not working because of a pending update from Mercedes' side and that they're expecting communication from Mercedes regarding this only in November 2024.

For the experienced members and experienced Mercedes owners here, is this a normal situation? Should I just wait and watch?

Would appreciate some inputs on what my line of action should be from here on.

Thanks in advance!

The transparent bonnet works when you are in offroad mode in the MID, or when the vehicle detects there is rough surfaces at lower speeds. It is very much present in the vehicles now, I recently happened to drive a GLC 4Matic and it was working in the same. During delivery, if it was not working, either some software fault, or it was not updated. Is the 360 degree camera working?
If yes means, then it is some software issue, and the one which is responsible to relay the video using the cameras is not working. Please check for updates with the vehicle one more time or to a different dealer. I very much remember fiddling around with this feature in the GLC. Hope this helps!

Happy Motoring!

Re: 2024 GLE450d - Transparent Bonnet Feature Not working in brand new car

Thanks BSilver. When I test drove the GLC, I saw it work smoothly too.

Incidentally, the dealer's workshop just responded to me saying that "The Off road camera feature currently is not supported for the model which is the GLE 450D."

I am surprised at this response because the salesperson infact was attempting to show it to me at time of delivery and said it's probably not coming on temporarily and a restart or some driving will make it work. Moreover, why would MB not have this feature switched on for their top variant in the series?

Is there anyway to get this confirmed by either MB India or other GLE450d owners here?

Yes, you can definitely reach the Mercedes India support. They are decently helpful.
But in cases where they don't have an answer, they include the dealer back. But the difference now is that its an escalation and you get a better answer now and most likely the official answer and not a lame answer.
