Kindly exercise discretion. Once the element of doubt creeps in, the mind can never be at peace.
I would even go so far as to suggest you wait for a vehicle manufactured after the days of the flood (reason: to rule out the possibility of it having been at the dealer's yard during the flood, even though the new Figo is made at Sanand).
There's almost nobody in Chennai who has not been impacted by this deluge. In such a scenario, it's better to be as cautious as possible.
Good luck!

Gentlemen, I am taking delivery of A Figo 1.5 base in the next couple of days. I booked the car on the day it was launched and the dealer always cited low stock and delayed delivery. I was having alternate rides and played along. But suddenly after chennai floods he urgently called me and informed that a base figo of different color is available. The dealer is a gentleman but still I have a faint suspicion that the vehicle might have been at chennai and should have been affected by the flood. How can I verify that the is not damaged in the flood.
The VIN reveals that the Date of manufacture was two months before the dealer contacted me with the news of the cars availability. |
I think you can ask the dealer to show you the transit sheet for the car. It should tell you the date it left the factory and the day it reached the dealer.

Hi, Please skip this. It's not even worth investigating. There are several reports of cars submerged in the stock yard and mostly damaged. If possible, cancel the current booking altogether and rebook, even if it means waiting for few more weeks. If waiting isn't an option, insist on original booking and seek full history of manufacture date, transit date, PDI.
Thank you brothers, I will ask for the transit sheet. Is the transit sheet related to Form-22? Is there any other official term associated with it? Will Form 22 reveal the date it was checked out of Sanand plant?
I am adding one point, I should have mentioned in my initial post. I am taking delivery at Madurai, 500km from Chennai. And chennai is not on the way from Sanand to Madurai, Bangalore is. So transit sheet will solve the issue.

I guess there are some tricky games going on out there.
I am still utterly disapointed, even devastated, at the "impossibility" or repair, which seems entirely down to VW and their policy of not holding, or being able to get, the necessary electronic spares. |
100% very true. I heard lot of news like this.
VW and Honda owners are disappointed the most, due to the incompetency of these auto giants. These two companies sell premium cars with top class electronic and mechanical components. ASC's are not willing to spend time and put efforts to diagnose and fix only the repaired part.
My colleague's Honda was affected in the flood and he has accepted this deal: (Do not come under total loss)
- Honday City Vtec.
- 2010 Model, 49000kms done .
- IDV - 5.10L.
- Estimation given by Sundaram Honda - 8L.
- IDV amount to be dispersed.
- 1.4L to be given by the buyer.
- 3.6L to be given by the Insurance co.
So the buyer is capable of fixing it and sell to the market.

Never buy in Chennai for the next 6 months. Form 22 is nothing to do with transit. Forms 19, 20, 21 & 22 are related to temporary/permanent registration along with the owner's address proof, PAN etc.

Hello,
My parents have a 2006 Santo Xing XO too. Driven
only 38,00 Kms. It got submerged
completely for almost
2 days. Dad got it towed to dealer.
Finally, they (dealer & insurance) gave these options:
1. repair for about 30K. (I seriously doubt reliability after repair)
2. declare total loss Insurance will pay 50,000 (Is Rs 50,000 a fair value?)
Any opinions please? My Dad is old and I am abroad.
Thanks

You did not list the options out properly:
1. repair for about 30K. (I seriously doubt reliability after repair). Perhaps entailing a yearly repair cost of 20-30K (Perhaps I am way overstating here)
2. declare total loss Insurance will pay 50,000 (Is Rs 50,000 a fair value?). And then buy a new vehicle for roughly 5 lakhs (= paying EMI of 10K)
In scenario 1 your suffer Rs 30K in year 0, and Rs 20K thereafter every year
In scenario 2 you gain Rs 50K in year 0, and suffer Rs 1.2L thereafter every yearfor 5 years

Sorry. Got more information from my Dad. Cost to repair the santro is more like 60k per the dealer. Insurance value is around 1.25.
Bottom-line per the dealer it can't be fixed and the dealer has asked my Dad to neogtiate and try to get about 80k for the car.
I hear that Royal Sundaram intend to pay me 3.2 Lakh for my submerged nearly-4-yr-old 1.6 Polo.
This is depressing. It really adds insult to injury. But I suppose that there is nothing I can do about it.
Update. It is not as bad as I think. They are paying 3.2, and a buyer is paying 1.3, so we will get 4.5, which, while still dispointing, is what I was led to expect.
However, why it can't be a one-cheque payment, I do not know.

What is your IDV? It will not be more than 4.5L. I think to reduce documentation work (transfer of owner, delivery note etc.,) and transaction time, the buyer pays the cheque directly to you as per the auction value. The remaining is paid by the insurer.

Post flood, we found the current year's policy and certificate and dried it out very carefully. It has since gone missing, so I cannot say what the depreciated it to this year.
Compared to IDV, it may be that I am not getting a bad settlement. But, compared to driving the car for the next four to five years, it is lousy.
My proud 2012 Highline Darth Vader could not stand the 3-4' of water during Dec 1-2 of 2015. His nervous system (the electronics) failed totally and the service centre now suggests a substantial spend (approx. 75% of original price). Insurance company is still weighing its stance.
1. Is there any reliable non-dealer service establishment in Chennai who can pad up the beast, back into action. Without costing an arm/leg.
2. How best to minimize my loss on disposal of this dead & down youngster - he has done around 40,000 km only so far
Any suggestions on handling the situation welcome.
My cousin's 5 month old Etios Liva Cross was affected in this flood as well,75- 80% submerged in water. Insurance company is paying the IDV to them.

If insurance company is issuing the cheque that means they are buying this car and selling it to the buyer. I think to avoid this, they advise the buyer to issue the cheque to us.
But what about the RTO transfer and all? Anyway, some further document, release note, or something is due on Monday: we will see what that is all about then.
Hi, just wanted to share the good news..Future Generali, with whom we had put a total loss claim for our Skoda Yeti, settled and paid the entire IDV amount this morning. It's a 4.8 year old vehicle with a zero depreciation option chosen on the IDV, the IDV being Rs. 9.9 lakhs. The entire process from lodging the claim to the settlement took just under three weeks. Really appreciate the speed, manner and the comfortable way the company dealt with us during this phase. Having read the horror stories of many others in dealing with other car insurance companies, am really happy to have insured the vehicle with Future Generali. Special mention of and thanks to Mr Aashraf from the company's Chennai office who handled our claim at every step, and Mr Yogesh who has been brought from the Mumbai office to help settle the claims, who dealt with us with patience and understanding.
