Busa, i am not sure how many people will post here considering that 99% of the cars here do not have ABS. Exactly what is your objective ? The majority says no, so what ?? :)

EL objective is to see that do people actually practise what they preach. Quite a few people including me said Hyundai have gone crazy and critisized them for not giving ABS on the Diesel Getz, wheras there are many on the forum having Swift VXi/VDi, WagonR/Santro/Verna who dont go for ABS saying it costs too much and then later put the money in ICE et all. So i would like to know who indeed do have ABS and know the adbantages/disadvantages offered by it.

Ok , here is my take which would be similar for many.

It is an absolutely personal choice. There have been millions of us having survived without ABS & even with these add ons, there have been very few people who have felt the need for this 'very expensive' add on when they hardly drive over 40-50kmph. Whereas it should be an imperative from the manufacturer's side to ensure the safety of their customers by implementing this BASIC safety requirement.

EL while i totally agree with what you say i think two things : -

1. Manufacturers should give atleast a option if not making it mandatory.

2. If people dont prefer having ABS & can drive well without it(people are doing that since years) atleast dont flame the manufacturers, because even if ABS was there they would not opt for it.

Car with ABS
Year & Make of Car :
Honda Civic 1.8S
Tyres : 195/55 (not sure, what ever is stock)
Discs : Both Front & rear
Was ABS std/optional : Standard
If Optional for How Much More : NA
EBD : YES

Year & Make of Car : Hyundai Accent
Tyres : what ever is stock
Discs : Front Only
Was ABS std/optional : Standard
If Optional for How Much More : NA
EBD : No

Cars without ABS
Year & Make of Car : Honda City 1.5 ZX
Tyres : what ever is stock)
Discs : Front only
Was ABS std/optional : No ABS
If Optional for How Much More : No
EBD : No

Year & Make of Car : Maruti 800
Tyres : what ever is stock)
Discs : Front only
Was ABS std/optional : No ABS
If Optional for How Much More : No
EBD : No

After using cars with and without ABS, I definitely recommend ABS. However that said, I find Hyundai brakes with ABS on Accent very ineffective.
:(

It's a misconception and more of an excuse that "Driving at slow speed in city does not need ABS...". I have been through a minor accident when few years back, on a rainy night I skidded and banged into a car in front, when I could have steered away. It should be mandatory on all cars and is of tremendous help when it rains or surface is lose.

Thanks ST

BUSA, I agree with EL. The reason most of us don't have ABS because it is made hard to get. When I bought my Santro Xing AT in 2003, there was ABS optional on it. Since we had ABS on many of our prior cars, we wanted it. But the dealer scared us saying it will take 2-3 months to deliver a car with ABS. It was only 15K but we needed the car in a hurry.

In other cases, ABS is offered in the highest trims only. For example, I am planning to buy Safari EX 4x4, and I like to have ABS. But not at the additional cost of 2.5L or so.

It is their personal choice, ABS is not as important as say seat belts or helmets. I have driven both ABS and non-ABS cars extensively, and I don't feel the difference to be too much as made out to be.

Wonder how this will help anyone...but still;

Year & Make of Car : Maruti Suzuki SX4 ZXi
Tyres : 205/60 R16
Discs : Front only
Was ABS std/optional : Standard
If Optional for How Much More : NA
EBD : Yes

Having personally experienced an incidence, I simply adore the control provided by ABS. To heck with a bit longer braking distance in sands and gravel.

If the Accent has ABS then it should be the Tornado which had 185/60-14 rubber.

Is this is a typo?

Another intresting thing to know about is that since ABS has less demand dealers usually dont stock ABS equipped cars and try to push the cars in their stock yard, hence scarying people by saying its going to take time, it works only after 100kmph and the likes.

Hyundai had released a GLS 1.6 model with nothing except the 1.6 engine and ABS at around Rs. 6.0L, this had no alloys and the tyre size i mentioned.
