Losing weight is not the real solution, but losing fat is. When most of the people lose weight, they tend to lose lean muscle which is exactly what goes against them.
Losing excess weight (read adipose tissue) and preserving lean muscle is what's required and that comes only when one engages in physical activity on a regular basis.

I often experience lower back and neck pain after long drives. In fact I was down on bed for 3-4 days after driving non-stop for 15-16 hrs during my recent Maharashtra trip. I own a Swift, and even the Swift seats are not supportive for my 6'2" stature. So I use a small cushion for the lower back that acts as lumbar support, and helps relieve the pain somewhat. For the neck, I've neck rests but practically they are of no use. I've to place another small cushion behind the neck after 4-5 hrs of driving.

Well, my friend, did you find any relief from the pain?

Thanks for your concern. Unfortunatey not yet. I think the SX4 seat is not gelling with me. Trying to replace the seat altogether.

Which are the cars which come with lumbar support in India? I believe Altis has electrically adjustable LS. Does any other C or C+ segment cars has it?

Tata Indigo Manza has a maual lumbar support.

I heard they have even worse rear seats. But shouldn't the ground clearance actually compromise all this? Just a thought.

Surprisingly the rear seats are more comfortable NOW compared to the front seats in SX4. The GC will help you in terms of throwing you off your seat, thanks to the stiff suspension.

Came across one interesting topic. Sharing for everybody's benefit.

Attached is a PDF file.

Hi Moderator: If you think a thread can be created for this can you kindly do that. I know there are plenty of threads for back pain and rally etc, but my case is little bit mixture of both.
I want to restore myself so will be great if i can create a thread for this and kepp updating it.

Hi all, i need everyone’s help to restoring my back.
I have a dream to participate in Raid the Himalayas. Since long time i was trying to gather information and trying to prepare.
The latest problem in my way is that i have got serious back problem.
Recently i showed to doctor and he says that space between L5-S1 has reduced and the lubrication between them has also decreased.
Now he has advised me not to do any work which involves and jerky movements.
I used to do Cycling something nearly 40 to 50 KM on weekends and used to run for 6 to 9 km every day.
I was doing some Swimming everyday for 1 hr. All of this i was doing to strengthen my mussels.
Recently i developed very high back pain and i was not able to sit even for 15 minutes on chair. (as such i work in IT company and sitting on chair for long hrs is required)
When i showed to Dr then i came to know that all i was doing was stressing my back and spine.
Now my physiotherapy exercises are going, i am not sure how much time will it take to regain full strength and be on rally track.
What help i need is advise from everyone
1) How can i strengthen my back at earliest.
2) Will i be able to do rally.
3) some tips for simultaneously preparing for rally
4) i own a Zen estilo whose seats are not comfortable, is it good idea to put some Bucket seats for back support which i can later put in my rally Gypsy
5) will it be good idea to buy a used gypsy of nearly 2.5 Lakhs and spend another lakh or 2 in making in rally one.
I am planning to fulfill this dream of rally down the line of 2 years, so want to restore back and then prepare for rally.

Amen to that!!! It did wonders for me. Now i don't experience back pain at all.

The rule is simple, if you get your back muscles used to lifting heavier weights than what your body puts on it. The body weight can no longer affect it.

Moreover, doing heavy compound exercises will make your whole body stronger.

Shan2nu

I have a small objection to that. you can make your muscles stronger, but it's the joints that give most of us pain, lack of muscles is more like tiredness. I am not very knowledgeable, but one needs exercises that relieve and strengthen joints.

As far as I have heard, heavy exercises in earlier life attack joints that cause the old age problems in latter years.

You heard it wrong buddy ;)

Most of the times, Joint pain is a direct result of malnutrition (at any age). Most of the people suffering from joint pain either do not take their micro/macro nutrients well or are overweight.

I'm not trying to save a day for those who lift in wrong style. Proper training is must. In fact, proper weight training on regular basis INCREASE bone density and joint health.

90% of four wheeler drivers have lower back pain, atleast 40% of them also have cervical or neck pain. Most of them let it go un diagnosed, some take over with rest and some with NSAIDS (pain killers). LBP while motoring can be lessened by using right contoured cushioning on the seat.

The lower part of the spine (sacrum) should rest on the base of the seat, mainly in order to absorb the vehicle vibrations and jerks.

There are neck pillows available to strap around the headrests which undoubtedly provide support to the neck area.

The wisest approach to spinal pain is stop and go, halt for at least 20 mins and proceed. Take a few steps on the road and resume.

Studies show increased water intake during driving lessens cervical-thoracic-lumbosacral pain.

Lastly, spinal pain can also be aggrevated by traffic and driving pressure and / or other domestic / work stress.

Dr.faramroze, I have seen many wedge shaped lower back support cushions which attack to the lower area of the seat. Are these useful? Any reputed brands you can think of?

Dr Faramroze
I have severe pain while sitting and driving. The pain is concentrated on (I am sorry for not knowing the correct medical term) two round joints/ depressions on either side of the tail bone. This is the same joint that I feel moves or comes into action when I raise my legs and might be joing to the thigh bone.
The pain is more severe when I am driving but is a little less when I am sitting in office. Other then this I have no pain in backbones and can easily bend at any angle in any direction.
Its been like this for the past year and a half and this co-insides with me loosing a lot of weight. By alot I mean 30-35 kgs, but this was voluntary by very severe diet control (not dieting), no alcohol or aerated drinks, eating out only once in a week or once in 2 weeks etc etc.
I know without physical diagnose and tests its not possible to advise a good remedy/ cure but is there anybody whom you trust that I can see or show in Delhi/ NCR???

Thanks

I know an ortho in Noida. He is one of the admins on an Indian Photography forum. If you are interested, I can give you his contact details.
