What does one do when confined to bed, Hitangshu? Read a novel, watch TV or fiddle around with the laptop!! I'm doing the latter... Orthopedic says I'm not to get out of bed (walk, work or drive) for the next 7-10 days. Looking for some mental boost from all the folks reading this stuff...
:uncontrol, doctor saab, get well soon

What are the best options (specific brands/ products) for separate lumbar support in cars in India? Browsing through this thread one brand i have come across is Amaron. Any other?

Very slim cotton cushion placed so that it supports your lower back. You can get one made locally for very little money. If you really want to spend a lot of money get one made from memory foam - does the same job for about 10 or 15 times the cost.
Dont bother about all the fancy stuff and 'lumbar support cushion's sold in different shops. I have already spent all the money to find out that they're useless - you dont have to do the same!
Regular stretching helps. I've got a set of lumbo-sacrillac (or whatever) exercises on a word doc, pm me your email ID and I can forward them to you. This is THE best remedy - always spend about 10 minutes stretching after you wake up, avoid sudden movements, dont lift loads that require you to strain yourself and always bend down at the knee when you have to bend forward.
One bit of advice that would be very very good to follow, but I havent followed till date is to get rid of the tummy. The stomach has no bones or muscles - its all held up by your back.

My MRI report just came in. Been grounded the last few days with a low back pain which progressively started to get worse (and I was progressively using heavier doses of analgesics to keep working, despite knowing this wasn't right), after a fall from the stairs (about 6 steps) exactly 4 weeks ago. It reads: MR findings reveal disc degenerative disease as - disc dessication at L4-L5 and L5-S1. - posterocentral disc extrusion at L4-L5 impinging over bilateral traversing nerve roots. - diffuse disc bulge at L5-S1. - ligamentum flavum hypertrophy at L4-L5.
Orthopedic says stay in bed completely for 7-10 days. :Frustrati
Very depressed... |
Rest followed by physio followed strenght training for the lower back. Please take it seriously.

Tired of lying down or sitting in a half-reclined position... Thanks, folks, for all your cheerful words. Seems I've just got to grin and bear the enforced holiday for a week at least.

Good time to catch up on some books and to generally spend time with family. Was painful for me at first, but my stint was over a month since they'd opened up my spine and we had to wait for the operated portion to heal. Read a lot during that time, and actually got to do a lot of stuff with my 5 year old (back then) that I would normally not have - tonnes of board games, cards, generally kiddie stuff etc.

Yeeeew! that
sounds painful! My daughter is pretty much fed up of me being in the house all the time (both of us work from home) - and milady's tired of running errands for me :D. Love perseveres till the back surrenders!:uncontrol
Huh, I am one of the unlucky ones who is suffering from a slip disk @ L5-S1. I was down with a very bad ache and was advised a complete 3 week bed rest. After that I started doing some yoga exercises(Swamy Ramdev Yoga for Back) and I feel definetely better on the day I do yoga. If I stop exercise, I feel that my back is again acting stiff and feel pain.
I definetely feel that all that matters is how flexible we are keeping our back and also to a major extent the posture in which we sit and work.
Another addition to the list guys.
I drove my Tata Indica from 2001 to 2005 for around 1.25 Lac Kms and never faced a problem with my back and neck. Then i drove my Tata Indigo from 2005 to 2008 for around 73000 kms and again never never faced a problem with my back and neck. Have been driving a Skoda Rider from September 2008 till now and in 21000 kms my lower back and neck and left knee seem to have given up. I'm 6'2" tall and a little on the heavier side. In my left knee the bone seems to have protruded as when i feel both the knees i can feel the difference in structure.
Need to go and see a doctor now, any recommendations for Good Doctors in Delhi guys??
EDIT: The Lumbar support is not helping me. Tried looking for a Neck Rest but i guess am a little tall for the neck rest, so will have that custom made..
Cheers...
Maybe i had it coming because of bad posture , height and weight , but i believe it was because of driving the indigo for 11000km in 3 months.
Started as crippling pain in my right leg. On diagnostics was detected as deterioration of L4- L5 & L5 -S1.
wAS driving an accent and an Indica before that. So about 70oookm on other cars and 11000 on indigo has taken a toll.
Now back to accent. Getting in and out is a disaster. But the ride quality and ergonomy, pedal position helps . Indigo had great seating posture high set seats , but very poor pedal position and a kind of hard bouncy ride. That may be the culprit.
I am looking at second car now. My wife 'll be only too glad to get the accent.
How is the suspension and ride quality on the Indica vista. The lumbar support felt great.
any first hand experiences ?
Back to the list.
Nov 2007 - L5 frontal compression. (slouch forward was cause). 2 months with back belt/medication solved it.
Jun 2009 - L6 rear compression (endless hours of working prostrate on bed supported by elbows took its toll.
This time Sujok - one trial sitting on Tue - moderate relief - pain migrated to L5 then to tailbone. Needles on Wednesday - painfree totally till now. (moderate lower back stiffness but nothing in original L6).
Am thinking of commuting on bike again. Prev time, found Alto/indica much more painful than bike. Swift is nice, but middle back unsupported.
Ideas? feedback? comments?
@ warrior ,
it may have been the steeds from the tata stable that caused the deterioration in your spine.
Indica & Indigo soak nothing and transfer everything up to the passengers IMO.
REMEMBER the closely spaced yellow painted strips of radium paint on some roads, the damn cars would do a quick jiggle on that as well , where it is hardly even felt on my accent.
And that too with slighty underflated tyres which i started going for to counter that bounciness of the ride. but to no avail.
its the nature of the beast...:)
I use lumbar support belt while driving. tighten my tummy in anticipation of every bump on road.
Doing lower back exercises and had homeopathy for 2 months after taking myoril 8 and neorkind plus for a week during the episode.
Now doing alright but do feel some soreness in the BACK now and then. But no pain now. medication totally stopped now. Fast walk in the morning and stretching lower back exercises for 20 min. later in the day.
Homeopathy - Ruhstox 200 , Ruta 200 , Bryonia 200. may have helped.
But terrible experience neverthless.
@ phamilyman ! do you really thing back to the bike would be good idea ?
take care !
