Filling diesel in a petrol engine

Hello frenz

I always had this question from the time i was in high school... Diesel and petrol are both flammable... though there is difference in viscosity and the chemical charecters etc...

The question i have is, what happens to the engine when you put diesel in a petrol engine and vice versa... I mean, will the car stall? will it refuse to start or will it go a good few thousand kms before it acts up... will petrol make a diesel engine "explode"??? Forgive my naivety but i wanted to get an answer to this question from the gurus... please oblige
