All MPFI cars have ECUs. There is a thread explaining the difference between mpfi and carb setups if you search.

Which is the reason why people get piggy-backs / standalones.

Santro's never came with a carb, they came with SPFI and MPFI.

SPFI meant Euro I and MPFI meant Euro II and above.

Hi

Ahh!!! never knew that Santro also came with Single Point Fuel Injection system as well. Were these the early Santro's the ugly looking ones?

If my memory serves me right, Santro's launch forced Maruti to go for EFI on their cars as well - in M800, Alto and the Zen. Then they started fighting over who has a 16 bit ECU versus 32 bit ECU.

Yes every car sold with fuel injection(petrol) and now-a-days diesels too have an ecu and the from the 2000 model year the ecu have something called adaptive learning, where in the ecu remembers the way it was driven in the pervious drive cycle and will make the required changes to the present drive cycle to the long term fuel trim and the short tern trims will be set as per engine load and demand conditions. The short term in turn sets the base fot the long term trims.

Piggybacks as the name suggests, is an aftermarket ECU that is connected to the stock ECU. It "fools" the ECU or overrides it to extract that performance that you need.

In case of standalone's, the stock ECU is disconnected/removed. The car will run with the standalone ECU which can be programmed with several map's and values and reading's for different settings like race, street, drag etc.

Hope this clarifies.

It will be costly and not VFM for Santro. Would suggest better air filter , FFE to start with.
