Was facing the same issue with my Linea sometime back.
Excessive smoke and lack of power every now and then.
Mechanic suggested to disconnect the EGR, did so, and no more black smoke,and lost power is back as well clap:

When i was said that it was due to a faulty EGR, i asked him to perform an EGR deletion. But they said it couldnt be done on these models since the turbos wouldnt work if EGR is not feeding the hot air to them

Engine noise (read clatter) has increased; black smoke. How long has it been since you cleaned the EGR last?

I can think of:
  • Air filter needs a change;
  • Fuel filter needs a change and if possible get the fuel tank cleaned;
  • Get the MAF cleaned so that fuelling is correct to the engine;
  • EGR needs cleaning again;
  • Check if all injectors are working!
  • Last but not the least try changing the fuel station.

1.EGR was cleaned a month back.
2. Air filter looks clean and i was advised not to change it
3. Is there anyother way to know whether adulterated fuel residue is causing this problem without removing and cleaning the fuel tank?? I forgot to mention this earlier, there is a HISSSSSS sound from the exhaust during accelaration as if air is leaking out through a dancing nozzle.
4. I cleaned the EGR a month back. Are you sure cleaning it again would help this in anyway???
5. Can i take the car to any local service centre and check my injectors. I have heard that it can be checked using a multimeter
6. Iam from Mahe. Diesel is cheaper here being an Union Territory area of Pondy. Almost every fuel station here sells adulterated fuel. I will find a reputed fuel station and see how its affecting the smoke issue.

Do you stick to one fuel station to fill Diesel? I suspect Adulteration.Try filling from a different well reputed fuel station (I always prefer BPCL).Also do check the fuel filter and air filter.

Should i do a high rpm run and check how the engine will respond to that??

In that case, would the engine show some signs of sluggishness?

Asking this for my Getz, which is emitting black smoke under hard acceleration.

Last October, EGR cleaning sorted out this issue and I'm doubting if that could be the culprit again.

Is the EGR valve functioning correctly? In the sense of it opening and closing correctly? If it is jammed then it could be malfunctioning.

Was the MAF cleaned anytime during the exercise? Reason I'm asking is that the MAF gives it air density and other parameters to the ECU for correct fuel quantity to be discharged.

Fuel filter condition should give you an answer regarding the fuel quality to a certain extent.

This looks to be a turbo plumbing leakage. Get the turbo plumbing lines checked and tightened if found loose.

Can you check what boost the engine is developing at 2000 rpm?

....

That is incorrect; sounds like a lot of hot air!
A turbo does not run on the hot air supplied to it by the EGR; it runs on the thermal content and velocity of the exhaust gases. The EGR merely assists in pollution control.

Will open the EGR this weekend and check.

MAF sensor has never been cleaned.
Will check this time.

Took my smokey to a Local workshop here at my place. The garage was full and so he took a quick look at my air filter and asked me to change it since it was already due. Posting some pics of it here. I was said it was good enough for an easy 2k kilometers by the SA

Almost certainly this is a turbocharger related issue. The engine simply isn't getting boost air from the turbo.
It could be connecting hoses, clogged intercooler, blower wheel or turbine caked with dirt/carbon, or whatever.

There is a remote chance that the HP fuel pump metering has gone awry; but this is very unlikely.

WIP smokey Getz.

Last weekend.
  1. Checked the turbo hoses - OK
  2. Intercooler cleaned - Partial clogging and traces of oil found
  3. MAF sensor cleaned

Result :

Will observe the smoke level for couple of weeks and decide whether EGR cleaning and decarbonization is required.

Great news. Good the the car is almost back to normal stage.

Did you find any dirt from the MAF during cleaning?

Thanks,

MAF sensor was taken out for the first time in 7 years.

There was some dirt, but I'm not sure how much dirt is ok.

So, will reserve my comments on that until I see a MAF sensor of a comparatively new car.

Any pictures of the MAF when you had removed it?

Did you use IPA for cleaning? BTW, were the intercooler and MAF cleaning a DIY?

Cleaning part was DIY but dismantling and assembling was done by a mechanic.
Hence, no photos were taken during the cleaning process.

Intercooler was cleaned using soap, soaked in warm water and flushed with high pressure water.
Scorching heat here took only few minutes to dry it.:)

kpzen, the sensor in the photo is a MAP sensor not MAF. MAP is tough and resistant to surface contamination compared to MAF.

MAF sensor would be just after the air filter box. Cleaning that would help if it's dirty.

Hi Sankar,

Thanks. I stand corrected.

Can the MAF sensor be cleaned ? or replacement is the only way out.
If it can be cleaned, then what method is the best to be followed ?

Hi KP, If you can source a MAF sensor cleaner or Electronic component cleaner aerosol spray that is the best option. Aim the tube into the actual sensor block inside and spray!

Else follow this method:

You can use 100% IPA which is available at medical stores.

Isn't IPA a better option as it dries faster?

The MAF cleaner (its also alcohol) dries faster and is better than most medical store sourced IPA as they don't carry 100% pure stuff. The blast from the cleaner spray also helps tol take debris away from the sensor flim. Lab supplies will be able to provide 100% pure IPA. Old audio/video tape head cleaner spray works just as well!
