My brothers safari is a 08 september 2.2 LX model done 23000km. On a recent road trip we were doing 130-140kmph while going to vizag from vijayawada. We were having a friendly race with verna.At first we did not realize but at about 120kmph when the accelerator was floored the RPM shot upto 3000+ with corresponding rise in engine noise but the vehicle did not pick up speed as quickly.Tried that a couple of times to really understand what was happening.Then went down to 80-90 speeds for some time and gave the accelerator gently now.The vehicle speed slowly went upto 130kph.Now my doubt is does this indicate clutch slippage and if so why is it happening at 120+ speeds?Is the clutch known to fail this early in safari`s life?
@Damodar
clutch plate is gone though not fully, you can drive for few thousand kms but its better to get it replaced.
TSK, will some WD40 on the belts help ? Also, any chance of air leaks in any of the hoses ?
The question is, which belt? And what if its something else.
The sound comes only sometimes. Not every cold start ensures this sound.

Are you hearing it with the windows up or down? With the windows down, it could be something rubbing against the inside wall of one of the tyres, like a branch or twig snagged. Does it sound in sync with something? Like in sync (rising / lowering in frequency) with engine RPM, or with vehicle speed?

Off late, I hear a strange sound from the safari, esp when she's cold. I suspect some belt, but its not like the typical chick chick sound which comes from the indica and small car belts.
The sound is more like a whistly hiss. Imagine you are trying to whistle, but instead of the whistle its slight airy sound instead of proper whistle.
and it goes like sss....sss....sss.....ssss
Depending upon your engine speed its frequency changes.
Mostly its heard on cold engine, and even then its faint. On warm engine it can be occaisonally heard.
But somehow it sounds like some polythene paper has gotten stuck to a belt and is repeatedly touching something as the pully rotates, but visual inspection of the belts did not reveal anything.
The sound is faint, so in a workshop its impossible to hear it with so much ambient noise, however, when driving with a wall next the road, its audible.
Any tips? I am worried that a belt may be about to give away or something. |
If this is hissing noise like extra air Leakage from the release valve of an Air tank of a truck and you can hear it distinctly when you open the hood, take it to the TASS and ask them to tighten the bolts on the common rail, inbetween the injectors, that will take care of it.
But there is some hissing noise from the vaccum release valve too, which is normal, but is not very loud.

This comes in parked car also. I tried looking around the belt area, there is nothing there

Yes, its similar. Will tell TASS to fix this when I go for the 45K service(Probably some time in March/April)

This will come as long as engine is running and increases with time/ acceleration. Over time, you will hear it in the cabin, if not corrected.

TASS will fix it only if they hear it. If noise increases, then I can go to TASS and get it tightened. For example, today morning it did not come at all, even at cold

Yes, thats the best approach with them. I follow it too :)
Nearing 60k;
Any idea how much the service would cost? I need to replace the clutch + pressure plate ( 10k approx). Seems I also need to overhaul the suspension at front and rear; I was quoted 20k just for this! Does this cost so much?
+1 to dadu/tsk; I too follow that rule :D
JK,
Not related to your query above, but what happened to the EW?
[quote=arijit.co.in;1716413]thanks for your response. i change gears at 2500 to 2800 rpm. about the speed limit during the 'runnin-in' period, i am indeed aware of that but thought of skipping it when i noticed during the test drives, the vehicle requires top gear at 100, and since as far as i know, optimal fuel efficiency is achieved at a slightly higher speed than the speed which calls for the top gear.
@Arijit: I own a 2.2VTT LX Nov 09 and i use the following sequence for downshift and upshift and find the engine to be taking it nicely without engine stalling.I have not gone through the manual.I get a decent FE of 12.5-13kmpl with AC in city.I use premium diesel of BP.
0-10km/h 1st gear
10-20km/hr 2nd gear
20-40km/hr 3rd gear
40-60km/hr 4th gear
>60km/hr 5th gear

Delphi will first measure the amount of diesel returning back in to the Fuel line from the injector, they will attach small bottles with premarked measurements connected to the return line from the injectors, run the engine for 5 min and check how much of diesel got collected into the bottles. This gives them an indication of the injectors performance and helps them decide if it needs replacement etc. Philosophy: If the injector is allowing as much fuel to pass through as it was designed for, the return will also be at pre-determined levels. If its more, injector is clogged or not performing. |
@dadu:
This method is called injector back leak test.It is done with the help of a CRDi tester and is done without engine running to check injector sealing and HP pump condition.The same test can be done with engine running to check injector condition.In both the cases the injector which leaks more amount of diesel than specified by the manufacturer needs replacement.Specs differ for Bosch and Delphi.The low pressure return line from the injector is fitted to the injector testing kit through an adaptor and the injector return hose is plugged.
If any of the injector is replaced then injection quantity adaptation has to be done by feeding the new injector code into the ECU through some scanner compatible with the ECU.injection quantity adaptation is done to minimise engine vibrations.
Every Diesel car workshop would have this CRDi tester and a trained technician would be able to carry out the test succesfully.

LDL dont ever wait for that red thing to work - it may or it may not and it never a good indicator. You will also find that engine oil consumption going up during this time. Air filter jammed up is quite harmful for the engine.
Also since it is a flint kind of material, bumping it to clean it does not help. Always change air filter at 7500 km, irrespective of what the manual or red thing says. |
I think I didn't put my query in appropriate words. What I wanted to know was that
how does one come to know that air filter is jammed up/ clogged? As such I am
not facing any problem with pick up/ power loss/ breathlessness or anything. Only thing that prompted me to ask this is a little coarser/louder sound from engine now (after 11k) then compared to when it was newer! Can it be a normal change in sound due to increasing use? I am yet to visit TASC for any clarification on this. Your valuable suggestions please..
