damper pulley in the palio 1.9d

Hi all,

Last week i started geting a clanking sound from the engine bay of my
palio 1.9. it sounded a lot like something which was rotating was touching
something else.

showed it to a palio specialist ( used to work for fiat A.S.S. in the
past) & he confirmed that it is the damper pulley which is gone.
he mentioned something about a part of it being moulded plastic.

He tried to source this from his contacts but they are out of stock.
( he says it costs about Rs 6,000 )

when i tried to find this part nobody seems to know what the damper
pulley is. ( tried 3 different spares dealers ) and from all the
research i did on the forums & this groups it appears that the part
we are looking at is the tension pulley.

so, could somebody confirm if the tension pulley & damper pulley are
one & the same ? and if you are aware of the cost do post it too.

i shall post some pictures of what it looks like as soon as i can get
hold of a camera & my car.

Thanks In Advance,
Sachin Filinto.

hey sachin,

no, the damper pulley also known as a harmonic balance is not the same as a tension pulley.
The damper pulley is attached to the crankshaft and reduces/removes any vibrations.
It is expensive to replace.i dont know the cost for the palio's damper.
It is a crutail part, hence go in for OE only.

Thanks Diven_b,
what would the typical symptoms of failure be ? this guy just heard the noise and said this was the defect in less then a minute.

damper pulley

I scrounged over the internet and I found out that the damper pulley is not the idler bearing pulley. Its a thing that sits next to the crankshaft pulley. Please do a search.

Also please go through the .pdf file which is very informative.

For the record, i have got this fixed over the weekend.
we replaced the damper pulley and the sound immediatelly stopped.
The damper pulley of the palio looks like the second image on the below link.

thanks to everybody who helped.
Dr Pullockaran, Ahbishek & not forgetting our mechanic Madhav.

Guys if you need a good mechanic for your palio in bangalore, i definatelly recomend Madhav. his diagnostic was pretty much on target.

I had a similar problem and got the Damper Pulley changed with the FAN Belt .

The main reason for this is the TIming Tensioner which also needs to be changed.

Total cost - Belt - 700
Pulley - 500
Timing tensioner - 1450
