That's typical HASS mumbo jumbo. Taking it to a local mechanic and oiling it did the trick for me.

I've seen that knowing a competent FNG guy is way better than relying on HASS.

No, zero duty demand. It was delivered by India post.

Good, but I may add a small warning, WD40 is great, very little oil, mostly propellant, but I was reading somewhere that the oil film may absorb moisture, and does not protect from rust for sure.

Bought a Garmin Nuvi 42 LM from Snap Deal. What will be the best location to affix same in the Civic ? The mount suction cup seems to have a affinity for glass rather than the dashboard.

I have 2007 Nov model and have done 67k kms so far. Sometime last year, front brakes started making noise (and very very slight shudder) when braking and coming to a halt. Took it to HASS (Sundaram Honda) few times. They adjusted the brakes, service the pads etc etc. Noise kept coming back. Finally I changed the rotor and brake pads (Rs.10k) last December. This noise has started coming back again. Only thing I noticed is, noise comes only after driving for some time (may be after brake pads / rotor has heated up).

Any one encountered this? (Didn't find anything similar when I searched). Let know. Thanks.

Depends on what type of noise you are experiencing. Is it squealing, squeaking, grinding, grating, or something else....

@pixantz. Its a kind of grinding noise. As though something is loose and brake pads are struggling to get grip. No issues with braking though.

1,30,000 KMS / 8.5 Years update :

I did not like the engine mount sourced locally of NOK make since it was not holding up well to my driving style with hard accelerations and triple digit speeds. So decided to to get one from Honda. As my previous two experiences of the mounts from Honda, the stock lasted 60K KMS and the first replacement another 63K KMS. The local NOK seems to give up its ghost with lots of abuse in just 7K Kms / 6 months.

Visited Dakshin Honda on Hosur Road, since my trusted SA was also there today, though he moved to Macgrath road centre.

Directly requested a mount change. It costs Rs 8388 as on date. They completed the job in 30 minutes.

With this expense the entire ownership costs works out to be :
Kilometres Run =1,30,000 KMS, 8.5 years.


Service Costs
Service + schedule replacement of components = Rs 93,618
Cost of maintaining Civvy as per schedule = 93,618/1,30,000 = 0.72 Rs/Km clap:


Add to this the expenses for wear and tear items like tyres, brake pads, wipers, etc..

Wear & Tear Items
Tyres = Rs 49500
Brake Pads and Rotors = Rs 18100
Wiper blades = Rs 3400
Engine Mounts (All three, front twice) = Rs 37350
Suspension = Rs 36000
Battery = Rs 10800
Total Wear and Tear item costs = Rs 1,55,150

Cost of Wear and Tear = 1,55,150/1,30,000 = 1.19 Rs/Km

I am more than happy with these numbers. Though an observation that after a lakh Kilometers was completed I incurred 30% of the above costs one shot.






The Recall and Product Update

Now a more interesting thing happened. My VIN number threw up an info that I am due for a product update. The recent recall issue for airbags. I was told both my driver side and passenger side airbag inflators need replacement due to the recall with an updated component. I was requested for another 45 minutes which I promptly agreed to.

In 45 minutes the replacements were done and the car was handed over. Pretty impressive and I liked the way they went with the PUD (product update) clap:




Some Information

Having seen that the products were from Takata, it immediately pointed me to some news article six months before. Since I had spent atleast five years of my career for Airbags S/W development and validation with an industry giant Tier 1, I kind of keep myself updated with info from the market. Probably all these are related??

I am looking to buy an old used Civic (8 year/50k odo). I understand that doing 1L+ kms on Civic should not be a problem if the car is in excellent condition to begin with. While I have gone through some pages of this thread, reading and absorbing 465 pages seems to be impossible.

I believe the following repair/replacement and price are most common:

1. Steering rack leakage (repair 10k, replace 50k?)
2. PS pump leakage (repair 20k, replace 80k?)
3. Front suspension overhaul (replace 25k)
4. Clutch assembly overhaul
5. Engine mounting (replace 10k)

Could the current owners verify and add to the above likely expenses?
How much would higher size wheels (17 inch) strain the suspension in Civic? Would it give way in 50k km itself?

Make sure the service history matches the odo reading. The Civic's odo can be tampered. PS overhaul at local garage would cost max 6 to 7k. A real 50k kms done civic would not need a suspension overhaul till 90k kms unless it was abused. Clutch should again last till min 60 to 70k kms again unless misused.

Thank you Sir for sharing this update regarding the airbags inflator. I think yours is the first reported Civic on the forum to get the required replacement under the recall. This helps us owners as to what to expect as my Civic is also under the recall for both side inflators. However, I am still to be contacted by Honda for it. Mods may also please consider moving it to the Honda airbags recall thread.

laluks, thanks for the update. A couple of questions:

1. Had you already registered on the Honda website with respect to the airbag inflator recall? I was wondering if that is necessary, or one could directly show up at Honda A.S.S.

2. Do you have pics of the new parts? I was especially curious about their manufacturing date.

1. No registration. I went for my mount replacement and they themselves offered me the PUD.
2. Their boxes show the same. Please check

Firstly, try and look for the face-lifted model. It's got some tweaks to its suspension and a few other worthwhile goodies. Unless, u're getting a really good deal on an older car. The following are repairs that I got done/ quoted by my FNG. All rates are parts + labour.

1. Steering rack leakage repair was quoted at 4k
2. PS pump leak repair - 3k
3. Front suspension - only the bushes are the culprits usually - 3k
4. clutch replacement - daikin exedy. 6k with labour
5. Engine mount - 2.5k

Clutch usually lasts for 80-100k kms. Suspension also. But it all depends on the previous ownership record.
