Useful post R2D2, i am wondering if 70k kms is right time to change the lube in Bangalore traffic condition ?(as preventative maintenance) Even though it mentioned in manual to top up, I doubt if ASC do it.

I dont want to ask them to do something and ruin a perfectly running car. (Btw i drive a terrano)

A top up is on a need basis. What ASCs do is check the mileage and level of the tranny oil. If the quantity is sufficient as per the dipstick or other approved method they will do nothing more.

Driving conditions vs replacement intervals are mentioned in the owners manual. Please follow them. If it is a lifetime factory filled lube as most MTs transmissions are filled with nowadays just leave it. 70K kms is not much running.

Don't bother unless your car is really old OR you're experiencing a problem for e.g. hard shifts, noise or oil leaks. All you need to do is check the level and top up if required.

I hasten to add - it is very, very important to get the correct type (GL4 or GL5) and grade. Do NOT fill in GL5 in a 'box that takes only GL4. Automatics are even more sensitive not just to the type and grade but sometimes even the makes of lube due to the additives in each blend.

I own a K-10 Petrol Swift 2010 (44K kms) and used MGGO Shell S4 GS 75W90 gear oil in March 2016 at 22k kms. This seems to be a semi-synthetic oil. My car has now run 44k (mostly in city) and I am wondering whether to change the Gear Oil or not. If I change would GS Caltex 75w-85 work as well or shall I get 75w90 at MASS or Motul 75w90. from Amazon? Since the last oil was semi-synthetic, do I really need a change. I would likely change my car in the next couple of years as well.

When it comes to gearbox oil just stick to what the manufacturer suggests.

Many after market lubes cause shifting issues or mess up the oil seals and/or synchroniser cones unless you are extremely sure about the compatibility.

Err on the side of caution and go with factory recommended lubes in the specified viscosities. This is even more critical with auto boxes including DSGs, DCTs, torque converters and CVTs.

While a gearbox oil change doesn't hurt and can improve shift quality it's not always necessary unless mentioned (by mileage/age) in your owners manual. I highly recommend going by the book. I used aftermarket synthetic in my car's GB and am back to OEM, which maybe semi or full synthetic I do not know as it is proprietary, within 2 years. It cost me a bit the peace of mind is worth it.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

My FNG mechanic recently told me that MGGO Shell S4 GS 75W90 gear oil is now available in 1 lt packs. He mentioned that they had a meeting a couple of years ago and told the company that they can't buy big barrels and the company agreed to provide 1 lt packs! However, the availability is a little patchy and I am waiting until he is able to procure for me.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

I use Shell Motul Motylgear 75w-90 for my diffs and 4wd gearbox except the regular gearbox for which I stick to an API GL-4 oil like Shell Spirax. They come in convenient 1 ltr packs and hence easy to share when the front diff needs 0.5ltrs more than the rear. The challenge is in finding a workshop that is equipped with an Oil pump to push the required quantity into the diff casing without the mechanic resorting to acrobatics to position the Oil can higher than the diff. I have an oil change due and planning to get the aquarium fish tank pipe with air pump for 100 bucks to make it easy next time.

The other thing I found is that nobody knows exactly how much your diff case needs as per manufacturer specs. They just fill up based on some “judgement” and then close the nut on the diff casing. Last time around I came home and inspected the remaining oil can very closely in bright light and found there was 800ml left in can no.2 when it should have been 500 ml with 1.5 ltr used. (The 1ltr plastic cans have a transparent slit on the side with measure markers). I promptly went back to fill in the remaining 300ml as diff oils are something we fill shut and forget for more than 40-50k kms typically.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

I have ordered Motul 75W90 GL4/GL5 from flipkart since Maruti is not supplying 1 lt packs of Shell 75w90 GL4 currently. I noticed that the viscosity of Motul at 40 deg is much higher then that of Shell even though both are 75w90 and GL4. Shell Spirax 80w90 has an even higher viscosity so not going for that. Any thoughts?

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Looks like it's getting more and more difficult to get hands on a 75W90 gear oil.
None of the reputed brands are in stock in Amazon, Flipkart or anywhere.

My FNG had an Indian brand Zoomol Syn in stock.

Looking for 75W90 gear oil-img_20220214_113634540.jpg

Technical data sheet of this product was available in their website surprisingly. The Viscosity index at 40 and 100 deg C is pretty low for this oil. So, I decided not to go with this.

I also came across some claims that GF-5 have Extreme Pressure sulphur/phosphorus additives which will corrode the synchroniser in manual transmissions.

Currently available oils online

Bosch Semi Synthetic Gear Oil F002H24629- Glide Synth GL4 75W90 for 2 Wheeler
Rs. 599/L

Despite the name, it's not for 2 wheeler. It is GL-4 rated and listed in Bosch catalogue as oil for cars and heavy vehicles.

Liqui Moly 20012 Gl 4+ SAE 75W-90 High Performance Gear Oil (1 L) Rs. 1653/L

Castrol Syntrax™ Limited Slip 75W-90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil is listen in their Indian website, but not available anywhere for sale.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Bumping up !!!
Was anyone able to procure 75w90 Maruti Gear Oil ?
How was the experience with other grades / brand who went in with them ?

I serviced my Dzire Diesel last year and changed the gear oil to Mobil Mobilube 80w90. Since then I am facing hard shifts when cold and grinding noise at times when reversing/first gear switch.

I am planning to change this BS oil and move to OEM but not able to source it. I tried MGP distributor, in fact got all my spares from him but they do not stock gear oil anymore.

Any help is appreciated.

Also one of the shop owner was suggesting me Shell 75W gear oil, costing ~600/liter. Has anyone tried it ?

I am currently using MOTUL MotylGear and am very satisfied with it. Got it last year from Flipkart around 600/L, but it currently is out of stock
https://www.flipkart.com/motul-motyl...mepuzdx9f9yj88

Boodmo has a listing for Hella gear oil. This is the first time I am seeing oils from Hella. So, no idea about it.

Thanks.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Thanks Vaasu.

Motul is not available anywhere. The Hella one sounds promising at least with the specifications. It is very new and hence I am considering options.

BTW has anyone came across this Shell gear Oil ?

I was told that this is the new 75W90. It costs ~800 for a litre. I cannot put this in unless I know for sure that this is GL 4 certified and is 75w90 indeed.

Never seen this - labels do not look like a standard Shell ones. Shell transmission oils are branded as Spirax

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Greetings to all members,

I have a 2004 Maruti Esteem petrol. In the owners manual for the vehicle the suggested gear oil grade if GL4 75W90.

I will admit that this was an oversight from my side. The gear oil currently in gear box for the past four years is Eneos Fine 75w90 Full Synthetic GL5 gear oil.

In these past four years the gear oil has been changed once with the same grade of gear oil as mentioned before.

My question to the members is can I continue with this oil grade or should I revert back to GL4 75W90 gear oil as mentioned in the owners manual?

I have not experienced any changes in gear shift quality or roughness in the functioning of the gearbox over the past four years of using this gear oil.

Looking forward to your invaluable input in regards to this issue.

Regards,

Broke_Enthusias

Please do not use GL-5 or GL-4+ grade transmission oil on a GL-4 grade recommended for the transmission.

GL-5 or GL-4+ grade transmission oils contains Sulphur which can react with yellow metals such as brass and bronze. I am attaching a document which explains the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 Gear Oils.

Transaxle_oil.pdf

Regarding the viscosity, you can also use 80W-90 if you don't get 75W-90. I am currently using "Shell Spirax S2 G 80W-90 API GL-4" in my 2009 Alto.

Re: Looking for 75W90 gear oil

Hello @bobbyblr,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Upon going through the pdf provided by, I observed that this is mainly for a Corvair car model. The Corvair came with a Saginaw manual transmission (please do not quote me on this).

These transmissions have specific requirements in regards to gear oil grade. However there are conflicting reports on many forums and YouTube that GL5 MT1 gear oil is safe as it has corrosion inhibitors for copper and brass.

Thus making it safe to use in a gearbox that originally came with GL4 recommendation. The Eneos Fine 75W90 Full Synthetic Gear oil meets MT1 requirements.

Also bhpian @beemer_bug recently changed his gear oil and chose to go with Eneos Fine 75W90 Full Synthetic gear oil for his Maruti Zen (jelly bean shape).

Hence, the cause for my confusion and doubts. Also as mentioned this oil has been running in the gearbox for the past 4 years.

Regards,
