OHC Radiator Problem

Hi guys,

I just had a weird experience with my car yesterday...

1> When i reached home from office, there was a lot of water & Coolant under the car.

2> Nothing dripped after i switched off the car.

3> After switching it on again, after a few minutes, i heard a hissing noise, water & Coolant were leaking out from the radiator and vapourising,

4> When I drove back to office, the car started to over heat, so i stopped at a petrol pump and had water filled into the radiator again.

5> Post the filling, there has been no leak from the radiator.

Could it be that the car started to when all the water / coolant leaked out and then the heat generated [by the overheating engine] sealed the tear / rupture in the radiator / hose???

This radiator I got fitted at coastal honda in Goa and have not had any head on collisions since that day. Will Honda Replace it if it is damaged?

Radiator problem in OHC VTEC

Hi guys,

My dad has a 2001 OHC VTEC which has recently developed engine overheating problem recently. Pearl Honda say that coolant's evaporating/leaking 'cause of a leak in the radiator from one of the 'joints' towards the top and they will have to replace it. My dad will be showing it to another local mechanic and ask him the possibility of doing a patch job. So far Pearl Honda haven't given him a quote for the job and I am thinking it will be quite expensive (will not be surprised if it's 20K-30K - Honda's spares aren't among the cheapest).

Please advice.

PS: BTW.. Where can I find the part number on the radiator? Just to make sure that if he goes to Pearl Honda he can make sure they have actually replaced it.

I remember paying about 6k several years ago for an OHC radiator which sprung a leak (possibly due to stone impact). Did not bother with insurance. The new radiator was of a better lighter design and even more plastic. The dealer at that time said Honda had modified / localised this part, earlier it was more than 12k.

Got a quote from Pearl Honda. It will be 14K plus labour. Part is not available yet and will have to be ordered. Dad will be checking with a few local mechanics too.

Yeah, Honda quoted me a price of 13k for the radiator in Mumbai. Please keep this post updated, I'm interested.

update

(Dad) went to a local mechanic and got the radiator checked. Apparently there's some sort of plastic bottle inside the radiator which had cracked. He replaced that bottle and car seems to be working fine now. Bill Rs 2400.

Not inside, but beside the radiator. That is the coolant reservoir. Did the mech tell you how it cracked ? Was it overfilled ?

Hmm. Dont have that detail. I wasn't there and neither was dad. He left the driver to get the job done.
