Starting problem in Palio 1.2 ELX petrol 2002

Hi All,

I dont know if this the right place to post the questions I have about the starting problem. (Just joined the team-BHP today)

Well, the isue I am facing is that if my car is stalled for a couple of days and then I try to crank it, the car does not start as it used to a few months back. It feels like the timing of spark an fuel injection is not right and the firing is not correct.

Later when the car starts with extra throtle, it does not give any problems while running.

Any clues why this would happen?

Another question I have is, does anyone around have the serivce manual for Palio 1.2 ELX (petrol)? If yes, is it possible to share a copy with me?

Regards,
Abhishek

Thanks for the reply!

I have checked the Plugs, got the filter cleaned up and I am not sure about the starter motor. Will get it checked soon and will let you know if it helps!

Regards,
Abhishek.

Another thing in the check list! :-)

Hi Ferro,

Added your suggestion to the checklist before visiting the service station! I have got the appointment (from service station) for two weeks later, so wont be able to post till then.

Hi Abishek,
Is your car able to keep the idle speed constant? Are you able to use the AC while idling. If your car needs extra air for startin, it only means that the air available thourgh the idle air by-pass valve is not sufficient for the engine to breath. Does the engine run smooth at part and full throttle (at the minimum and maximum load conditions).

Infact, its not completely the Service Station's fault. I am myself running a lot busy these days and dont want anyone else to take the car for servicing.

@Ilangop:-

The car sometimes does miss a beat when I release the throttle(Like if I am at say 60kmph and have to change the gear, at such times the car sounds like it just woke up from sleep ), however it never chonks off in the middle of the road. A/C stays up just fine on idle. The issue arises only at the first start of the day..later it runs fine and starts fine.

In this tech thing the query query was just washed away. :-( I am looking out for the service manual for my car. (Palio ELX 1.2 Petrol). If some one has got one, is it possible to share with me? I stay in Pune and can get it photocopied.

Thanks for all your help!

Regards,
Abhishek

Ok, could you check if there is any adjustment for setting the ignition timing. Inspite of the ECU controlled ignition Cielo, and Maruti 800 MPFIs have got a manual adjustment for the ignition timing. "Missing a beat" could occur due to possible ignition timing mismatch.
To find a manual just get into Ebookee.com: Free Download eBooks Search Engine! or www.pdftown.com. As much I searched, could'nt find a manual for Palio. But there were manuals available for similar Fiat vehicles like the Bravo or Brava. That would contain almost 80% of what a Palio has got. Just give a try.

Hi Ilangop,

Thanks for those links! I actually found a Service manual for Fiat Siena earlier; however it is in some language that I dont understand!

This time, I have downloaded the manual for Bravo and quite sure that should be good enough!

Regards,
Abhishek

Hello Micki,
Why don't you post the symptoms / problems you see in your car? Experts here might be able to suggest you the fix.

re: Starting problem in Palio 1.2 ELX petrol 2002

Ok, Well Here goes. She starts up beautifully at the first crank no matter what, but after heating up she refuses to move like she's supposed to. Acts very sluggish. In the second gear she appears to pick up speed, Then through the third, fourth and fifth gears there is not much difference in pickup at all. i.e she feels as if she is just dragging along. Fuel Efficiency is also very poor. I'm getting around 7-8 Kmpl. Also one of the bolts that the holds the exhaust at The manifold flange is broken, the car is sounding like a sports car, could the symptoms be due to that?
I've also decided to change the Plugs. Could someone suggest the Best plugs that i can use? i Would prefer Iridium ones. And also the best Oil that i can use in the Palio.

Thanks to Everyone in Advance!

Check the plugs, the coils and leads too. When was the car last serviced, are the filters all clean? Manifold leak- loss of power can happen but so much is rather unusual. Then again did this start along with sound / manifold bolt issue?

You can use any good quality plugs, iridium ones will give you better performance if the engine is modified with higher compression etc. Oil you have many choices but the obvious one with good availability would be Mobil 1.

Get the O2 sensor checked after fixing existing manifold/exhaust issues. When it goes bad on a Palio, the injector/check engine light doesn't come on. The symptoms point to a faulty O2 sensor.
