The thing about the catalytic converter is true. I too faced the same problem with my X3 especially when the car was asked to crawl through the traffic in the city for short trips and when the car couldn't get pass the 2 or 3 gear due to the traffic.

As Akshay says, the solution is taking the car for some spin to clear out the shoot built up in the exhaust on a decent drive. In fact it was him who enlightened me with the smoke issue when I first faced it.

Take the car for a decent run up once in a while and you'll be in the clear.

Enjoy the car

Wasn't this type of burning the soot been there for long time? But it should not result in white smoke. Should be invisible or little dark if its not burnt up completely.
