Any one remember the Indian Front Engine ( Longitudnal) Front wheel drive Vehicle? Not the 3-wheeled Bajaj with the 2-stroke, 2 cylinder water cooled engine mounted on the front wheel.

I have a very basic question. Can any one elucidate the difference between AWD and 4WD, or are they same. TQ

Basically in an AWD vehicle, all four wheels of the vehicles are powered by the engine at all times.Where as in a 4wd format, u have the option of powering just the back wheels or all of the wheels.

I have one more query, is it true they say RWD cars are more prone to over steering? and FWD cars are prone to under steering? Or the other way around? Some one at office was discussing this and i was over hearing the conversation :) Now i am curious!

I dont know if this has been covered earlier in this thread but isnt it easier to pull off a drift in a FWD using e-brake than one in an RWD using the loss of traction method?

If this has been mentioned earlier pls do ignore..

There is no thumb rule as such. It also depends on how the car has been setup.

Our innova is RWD, but i tends to understeer when pushed beyond the limits of traction. So RWD doesn't always mean oversteer.

correct me if i'm wrong
1.hand-brake in FWD cars locks the rear wheels.
2.pedal brake in FWD cars stops the diving(front)wheels.
3.it is opposite in RWD cars,hence the drifts.

1. Not sure, but guess you are right since i've seen people doing static burnouts in FWD cars.
2. Pedal Brake should stop all the wheels at once.
3. Correcto, Hence the drifts(Note, the 'Proper' drifts are done by using the throttle and steering control mainly and Hand-Brake is used only for slight manouvering)

Fuel efficiency conscious buyers may prefer FWD and don't care about where the power goes.
But still don't we Indians even have a choice of a RWD car(under 14 lacs),something like the mark x.The only affordable RWD sedan is the amby after which one has to shell out >30 lacs for a german.

There is another type, which is like a 'part time AWD' like in CRV, Captiva etc. These are primarily 2WD and only when there is a slip in any of the powered wheels, part of the power is divertd to the other wheels which are otherwise non powered. Manufacturers simply label them as 'AWD'.

That is in case your cant see anything other than German. You can buy Camry - 20 something lakhs, Ambassador - 5 to 7 Lakhs, Tata Nano - 1.8 to 2 Lakh :D Talk about practicality, will you ;)

The Camry is a FWD sedan.

Oops. My bad. Thanks for the correction bro. :) I have no first hand experience with the camry. I was so told by a friend who own one, he was also in a conception that he has a RWD car(He drives a RR Sport and the Camry has only been chauffeured) until i corrected him now. :D Thanks again.
