Cheaper and more lasting option would be a good rubbing and polish every few months. Anyway the way Indian drivers drive like F1 drivers (not mine, but confirmed by Louis Hamilton), cars needed to be dented/painted. There goes your teflon protection.

Post Edited by the Team-BHP Support : Do not use more than 2 smilies per post. Please view our board rules carefully before proceeding any further.

Vasudeva agree:!! Yesterday only, the traffic signals were not working and all bikers were jumping the light from left right and center. The crowd was looking like a circus to me

Just as I was about to cross the section, heard a screeching noise and a biker ramped into my car on the rear bumper and passed by

Could not stop as it was a busy section hence had to cross and then took a side to have to view at the damage. Luckily, had a minor scratch.

people often complain after they have been duped and then they raise a hue and cry!

why cant the same thing be done before going for a purchase of any thing, search on the damn internet and find the correct information about it and then decide!

why use the internet after loosing your money? use it before and save your money!

anyway i love answering the questions about paint protection for the vehicles, cause thats what i have been doing for more than 15 years...rectification of paints, enhancement of paint, paint selants & coatings, etc!

yes its true 3M cant offer you a Teflon Coating, cause its a Dupont registered trademarked product!

like all motorcycles are called bikes, all SUVs are almost called JEEPS and Honda activa, LML vespa, Bajaj chetak are all called scooters. similarly almost all kinds of paint coatings or selants are called Teflon Coating!

people are enchashing on the brand TeflonCoating and fleecing people money by doing ONLY rubbing and polishing!

rubbing compounding and polishing is done to take out the imperfections out of the paint work and to enhance the shine and gloss of the paint, nothing else!

paint selant coating applied on the paint work after the rubbing and polishing to seal that glossy and shiny and cleaned paint to protect it from UV rays, oxidisation, acid rain, pollution, tree sapping, bird droppings etc.

but it will not protect against scratches of any kind and nature!

almost 99.99% of automobile dealerships offer so called "Teflon Coating" to ROB customers of their hard earned money!

STOP BEING STUPID AND GETTING ROBBED!:deadhorse

let me answer this in a very short question!

does a skin/hand cream really help?

how long a skin/hand cream lasts?

same way teflon coating is just a skin cream for your vehicl's skin (paint)!

Parm my Safari is 16 months old. Ive been looking for some paint treatment which is more long lasting than a regular polish. While searching I came across someone offering polymer treatment for paint. I saw the product they use, some German product. They had just finished doing a black Ford fiesta and the finish was reflecting just like a mirror. But the price put me off- 8500Rs.
Do you have any alternative suggestions which are less expensive ?

The problem with the net, esp. forums, is that you get a lot of garbage advice along with a bit of the real thing. So for a newbie, it can take quite some time to shift thru the tons of info available.

Just the other day I was at the Hero Honda service centre in Kothrud, Pune. I showed them the scratches they had made on my new bike... and the supervisor or whoever it was, promptly asks me if I'v got Teflon coating done. I asked how does that matter... when the problem is caused due to their mishandling of bikes. He says it will prevent such scratches from happening. I gave him a mild piece of my mind about the Teflon crap. He had obviously assumed that I wouln't know much about their scam and would swallow their crap and instead of them having to change anything about the way they worked, I'd just quitely cough up another Rs. 500 - 1000 something they charge for the scam Teflon job. Neat trick and cool money to be made. They make money while the customer feels hes done something about preventing scratches in future. If the scratches happen in future they can always say its useful only upto a point and beyond that the scratches will happen.

What is very clear that such service centres have a pattern. You can tell from their responses and from the trick questions you ask them. It will be fairly clear how most of the things they will be doing there will be a con job, one way or other. And without getting into detail, I experienced exactly that over there.

So don't just not get fooled by such things and use them as an insight to judge their way of functioning. Any establishment that even offers or advices such things should be suspect and avoided as far as possible.

One of the motivations behind the Team-BHP Advice Section, covering the most common transactions (by existing & potential car owners alike) :). Also, we are ever-expanding the Advice section to include newer topics.

I reside in an apartment complex with quite a few cars . The car wash guys re-use the water for cleaning the cars. In spite of telling them several times to use water afresh, they are back to their old ways after some days.

The muddy water tends to scratch finely the paint. Any suggestions, any coatings I can get done to avoid the damage to the paint in B'lore ? I've booked a new car and that worries me even the more.

^^^ No coating is going to protect you from that kind of abuse. You have to work on getting it done the right way.

Dudes, aren't you missing one important point? PTFE (polytetrafluoroethelene) just cannot stick to surfaces like that! You need specialised processes at very high temperatures. I don't see any way to pour it out of a bottle and getting it to adhere to your car... lol!

Its just a very successful con job. Consider yourself lucky if its just some cheap wax... and not something worse than that... :D

:thumbs up I agree Raccoon, Worked with PTFE for a decade now, PTFE is available in various forms and grades depending on application. When using PTFE as a coating- there usually is a base coat and top coat process. Also this require surface preparation for good adhesion.
Tell this in the U.S ' Had a Teflon Coating Done'- they will said - What's that?

When I got the Teflon Coating done for my new car from Maruti, I check what do they use for it. The use some Dupont product, which costs > 800 bugs per bottle. He said that they would need 1.5 bottle and they repeat during my 2nd service i.e., after 12 months.

When I bought my OPEL CORSA SPORT, The dealer conned me to have a Teflone coating. Cost me Rs.4000/00. Later I found out that it is only good for repelling dust and water. I spend another Rs.7000/00 and got Laquor coating done. This coating done by spraying and baking the in a temperature controlled oven which hardens the coating. This was very effective and the original shine is sealed in. The car still looks as if out of the show room even after 8 years.

I have a cousin selling car accessories, here's what he has to say about teflon coating: Real teflon is what you see as a coating in Teflon non-stick utensils. It costs Rs 20K per kg. It has to be sprayed on the car. If you scratch on the coating using a key, it would look like a white peeled-off-dry-skin. In such a case, you would need to clean the surface and spray again to remove the scratch. What Car dealers advertise as Teflon is actually 3M Cleaner+Polish+WaxCoat (Three bottles, to be applied in the same order). They spread minute quantities of each of these liquids using a vibrating machine. You may buy the above 3 bottles for a total of 400 Rs and apply using cotton (baniyan waste). This would last two rounds of polishing, and the polish would last much longer. I have tried this in my Cielo, I felt this is better than spending money at the dealer.

^^^ 3M Cleaner+Polish+WaxCoat !!! So if this is what they are doing on a new car, they are harming it! A new car should not be polished!
