Guys

I think this is the air intake ... :Frustrati

It has cracked at a few places ... does it affect the fuel efficiency ??
Performance ??

Can i seal it with some kinda tape ??

What shall be the cost of replacement ??

How would it affect the overal performance of car ??

Please suggest.


P.S Mods : I have used image from some other thread for reference , hope it is fine.

I too face this problem & have temporarily used tape to cover the cut till I get a replacement.

Oflate i have noticed a hissing sound , and the engine jerks a bit (very less) when i crank it start ( It jerks just as the engine comes to life for 1 sec).

Though mt FE has been around 7 Km/lts , i have not noticed any dip in power.

Am looking for alloys for my S 10 ( You know we guys have these 98 PCD problem) if you come across Linea / Punto wheels in any car shop in hydrabad .. give me a buzz i would come down and collect them.

Try wider tape even duct tape will do. The electrical tape might be too thin and would allow unfiltered air in. The ribbed bellows design of the pipe make winding tape difficult so I used 1-1/2" duct tape, earlier I tried electrical tape but was not satisfied with the results. I am told that these pipes are available with Concorde. I have not been able to drop my car off so I have not got it changed yet.

I will keep an eye out for 98 PCD alloys. LOL so many people want them!

I think a crack between filter and throttle body is dangerous, Kindly get it sorted at the earliest. Cheers

Join the gang! It seems like a common problem. It happened on my car too. At the same spot.

Often it is difficult to get it and expensive, I wrapped it with self adhesive dressing tape (cloth type). Electrical insulation does not stick is changing tempt. scenario. wrap with dressing tape and tie a wire tag around the tape. works fine till you get the replacement.

That happened to me too. Get it replaced ASAP, since you will be bypassing the air filter and sucking in dirt. It would be a good idea to change the engine oil/filter and have the intake manifold/throttle body cleaned.

Don't bother with tape and cheap fixes, because they won't work well, and if the tape comes loose you engine will get damaged. The flexible pipe with its accordian type of surface is just not repairable with tape. I paid over Rs. 1000 from the dealer.

Just replace it. It's quite cheap.

Replace it Yes !, but don't loose sleep over it, managing with a tape for the time being won't kill the engine.

When you have to spend so much money for the stock pipe, cant you change to the steel flange that is used in case of aftermarket airfilters like K&N?

Its about Rs 600-800 only for the flange. This will be a one time investment also

The air intake hose if broken can definitely decrease the performance. Tapes don't work.

Most of the cars I have seen have broken air intake pipes. The noise it makes is wild.

I noticed a small crack at the bend after the airbox on my corsa couple of days ago. For now, I have used M-Seal to cover it and it has stuck like a rock and holding good. This set up will continue until I can find an used part.

I too did face the same problem recently. My mechanic has fitted in a GI(metal pipe of 2 inch size) along the path of the hose with the same shape and told me that this will be as good as a pipe for life time. I am trying to source this pipe. But would like to know if this is a good idea to do. I find the insulation to be very good and he seems to have done a good job in getting the pipe bent in the same shape as the hose.

Don't stick it without making sure that it's not going to come off. If this gets sucked into the throttle body and consequently the cylinder, you will have far bigger problems. Don't crib on spending a few hundred rupees, the resulting damage will go into the thousands.
