I personally feel that rear wipers are must especially in monsoons when you are night driving. It's almost difficult to see through your rear view mirror with all that mud and grime at the back.

I thought of fitting a rear wiper but the cost is whooping 18K for a complete set up.

therez a white lancer (decently modded one) out here in Pune. this guy has installed a wiper on the rear screen and its in working condition. the motor assembly sits inside the boot and hole is drilled in metal just near to the lower part of windscreen where the rubber goat ends and meets the boot.

i guess the job is not that complex however, you need to carry out an exercise to find the exact location from where the wiper sweeping action is more effective. the wiper arm and blade design also requires attention to be given to.

so, happy DIY.

Hatchbacks & SUVs need a wiper at the rear than Sedans.Go for a drive on muddy track in all the three & you'll realize that the sedan remains cleanest. My observation is that in the absence of a boot, the rear end of the hatchback & SUV gets all the muck.

Rear Wiper Wash - Why only on hatch backs and NOT on sedans?

Rear Wiper & Wash - Why only on hatch backs and NOT on sedans?

Why is that only hatch-backs (even the [top-end] low cost TATA Indica has one) and some MUVs and SUVs have a rear wiper & wash while none of the sedans have one (including top-end Mercs and BMWs)?

I think its because of the physics of the airflow , that dust ends up getting settled on the rear glass in hatches/suv's/estates

for sedans , its not much of an issue

Yes what greenhorn has said is correct. Rear wash & wipe can only be found on hatchbacks and some notchbacks with very short boot.

Correctly brought out!
I believe Accent Viva has a viper on the rear and it has a short boot.

yes, but the rider doesn't have one.

Its pretty stupid in my opinion.

a 4-5 lakh getz has one but a 12 lakh car doesn't.

I find them pretty useful on the getz... the only problem is they are not intermittent. So you have have to keep turning it on and off every once in a while.

Correction: a fully loaded octi HAD one!! Only the first few batches of the elegance/L&K had them, then they were discontinued.

But i personally feel, the rear wipe is needed in saloons, not for the dust cleanin purposes as stated above, but for reversing in the rain. Especially with the kind of rain that we have here, its almost impossible to see anything when through the rear windscreen of a car. And since a saloon has a slanted rear glass, more water is always present when compared to a hatch.

JAYD good point there.I have always felt that a verna needed a wiper badly. It has a small boot section ,almost like a viva.

The rear wash and wipe is functionally required on hatchbacks or notchbacks because of dust, grime etc. thrown up by the rear tires during driving. This is particularly noticable during the monsoons when muck thrown up by the rear wheels settles on the rear windshield completely hampering visibility.

This issue is not as common on a proper sedan due to the overhang of the boot beyond the wheels.
