Torsion bar or leaf/coil springs. Which is better ?

Hi Guys
Why do manufacturers use torsion bar based suspension only at the rear and not at front? Are there any particular advantage over employing leaf springs/coil springs. Also not really clear if leafsprings/ coil springs are same. Please clarify doubts.
Thanks.

Well I can clarify that leaf springs are not the same as coil springs. Leaf springs are for load carrying and coil springs for comfort and handling. Look at a truck or a bus and you can see leaf springs easily.

You'll mostly find leaf springs on trucks and off roading vehicles. They provide soft ride over rough surfaces ( think Amby)
Helical springs are widely employed in modern cars and function independently of each other providing a more stable and very comfortable ride. More importantly, they add stability to the cars dynamics

Torsion bar is used in front also, example - qualis, tavera, and leaf springs and coil springs are totally different

If i start typing the differences it will get too big and boring, instead check out these links, Car Bibles : The Car Suspension Bible page 1 of 2
