Ignition Key Esteem VX 2001 - comes off even when engine is on

Hi All,

I don't know, if this issue has been discussed earlier or not. I tried searching, but was not able to find anything releated. Hence, requesting help in a new thread.
@MODS: Please merge the thread, if issue already exists.

Ok Seniors, my problem/confusion is that, the ignition key of my Esteem VX 2001 easily comes off even when the engine is running.
I'm confused, whether it will pose any problem/danger in future to me and my Esteem? If yes, what are the areas should I look into? Should I go for duplicate key? Or, this will not make any difference.
I have a duplicate key, which was given to me by the dealer when I purchased this car last year, but, that key doesn't fit to the ignition/ door-looks (ie it open the locks, but then doesn't come off).
Is this really serious? I'm really confused. Any help

Regards,

Hi,

Any one out here, willing to suggest me something? Or should I leave the ignition key issue as it is, if it's not a big deal?

Regards.

most probably the ignition lock is worn out - you'll have to buy another ignition lock from your MGP dealer/MASS and replace the current one - you'll get two more keys with the new lock and you'll have to carry this along with your door keys!

You also have the option of buying a lock set which costs around 2.2k or so and replace all the locks.

I had the same issue in my esteem.
The key's thickness wears out over time.
I got a new key made for 50 bucks and the issue is almost solved.

I did that & then after a while went the extra mile & changed the entire set, 2 doors, ignition glove box, boot. Now it's brand new, costed around 2.6k. After all the car is 8-9 years old, suggest getting the whole set replaced.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses.
I will go the complete set

But, still have this query, what are the adverse effects, if the ignition key tends to come-off the hole?

Regards.

no adverse effects in terms of danger , but say it falls off and you dont notice it. it could end up in a corner / nook of the car where you may not see it. This means you wont be able to switch off the car when you reach your destination nor lock it.

Yeah, the only problem is it may fall off while driving. But then, I think one would still be able to switch off the engine by partly inserting any other key ( I have tried this in my bikes and it worked, not sure if it would work for the car as well )

As suggested by our friends, the best bet is to change the entire set and live in peace.

No problems as long as you do not lock yourself out of the car with the engine running, happened to me once.

Actually you can switch off & lock your car, but you cannot open it or self start it.

You guys don't know how to stall an engine?

Forgot the time you were learning how to drive/ ride.
Those days it was tough to just keep it on.
and now trying to figure out how to switch it off.

Hi All,

Changed the whole set. Now, all is well regarding ignition key, it's holding tight in the key hole.

But, a strange issue is happening now. The headlights are not switching off. Not even when I lock the car. Checked the fuses, they are fine. Cutout wiring is also fine. STRANGE. Atlast I removed the red wire from cutout to switch them off tempararily. Now, the headlights are off, but the 'High-beam' indicator on the panel id still on. Hence removed the fuses from cockpit.

What could be the issue. Have I done the correct thing by removing the cutout wire and fuses to swich off the headlights for the time being??

Please suggest.

Obviously our incompetent MASS mechanics have screwed up the wiring while R&R the steering combination switch. Get it back to them for rectification. In the meanwhile, removing the fuse alone should do.
