Team-BHP - Lacquering the engine bay

Hello All,

My i10 was due to the first service and had clocked 1160k , so asked the hyundai service center people to pick the car from my office today. When the guy came he was mentioning about lackering of engine bay and he was telling the advantages that it will keep the engine cooler and it has to be done yearly once. does anybody have any idea or anyone got it done before this thng?

Guess you mean lacquering...while I do not know the use of lacquering the engine bay (never been suggested that at least by TASS), I would guess it would be on par with their "Teflon Coating"- completely useless. Best avoided, IMO

rl:rl: These service advisors really come up with the most innovative reasons for their useless add-ons (teflon included). Please avoid. Lacquering of the engine bay has only one purpose : Aesthetics. It makes the engine bay look good, and easier to wipe off dirt.

Tell you what : Go back & tell him you know of a place that does engine lacquering for a 1,000 bucks. Take his car, bill him for a 1,000, get it done for 500 and pocket the change.

This deserves a mention in the SCAM thread.

Engine cooler?? Never knew lacquer had a cooling property as well:uncontrol
Sir, don't fall for this, absolutely no use apart from probably being easier to wipe off dirt.

This is the funniest thing that I have read offlate. Come'on lacquering the engine bay !! Holy Christ what has gotten into the brains of these SA's.
Apparently the engine bay is always covered and why would someone need lacquer ? If you dint know what laqcuer actually meant please see

Now why on sweet earth do we need this in the engine bay.Are we gonna drive with the hood open and show off that the engine bay is lacquered ?

If you are really keen on seeing your engine bay spic and span, soak diesel on a piece of cloth and wipe the engine bay clean. Dont over do it though.

I got suckered into this several years ago with my new OHC. The engine bay looked stunning initially. Over the 4 years that I had the car the "lacquer" started peeling from the parts that get really hot and it looked ugh. When I put the car up for sale I would invariably be asked if the car had caught fire. Thankfully I had preserved the invoice of the lacquer job to back up my claim of everything being ok with the car.

Well i have this engine lacquer in our Zen .The benefit is you dont need to use water on the engine bay to keep it clean.Just using high pressure air gets rid of the dirt .Also the dirt doesnot stick to the component due to this.Also if you clean the bay with water than the lacquer will peel off.
It does not catch fire.I am not supporting you spending money on it bit if you like to keep your bay clean then nothing like it.Average life of this laquer is about 3-4 years .Our has for 6 years and only now has it started peeing off at places .

Also this is much more helpful you you have no oil seeping from places .

I am sorry i had to use my cell phone for this.I have reduced the size of the pics here .However you can download the pics and zoom and then you will be able to see the peeling away issue .Also i forgot to metion before this has helped in keeping the plastic parts like new and rubber parts are still like new .In the second last pic you can see if i dust off the pipe and plug wires are as good as new .(And they are soft too with no cracks + shinning)

And i am sorry i do not have any old pics but i would like to mention here the slight discoloration is due to peeling away of the laquer layer.

Exactly, i mentioned it in the thread, they call its engine lamination here at MASS in Gurgaon.

Waste of money, pls Avoid.
