What is the procedure for push-starting a car??

For me this has always been a "always wanted to know but too afraid to ask" kind of question. I haven't seen a car being push-started for years now and when i did see it i didn't have the technical knowledge that i do now (thanks to team-bhp). So, what is the correct method?

the normal method is you put it into first and keep the clutch pressed.get some one to push it and as it attains a decent speed leave the clutch.the jerk causes it to start.i definitly would want to read the technical way to do it as this is the most common and practical method by which its done

its easier to push start in the 2nd gear...you would get less of a jerk from the engine...and overall less load on the components.

It's easier to push start my Esteem in 2nd... Maybe it depends on the car's gear ratios... In 1st, when I release the clutch, the car stops too quickly, while in 2nd, the engine gets to turn over a little bit before the car stops...

...also it reduces the chances of the poor souls pushing from behind suddenly smacking their noses on the back of the car!

In an MPFI car, you will need at least some minimum voltage in your battery (ie. battery should not be completely dead)... this is because the fuel lines to the injectors need to be pressurized and the ECU needs to be "awake" too... with a completely dead battery, an MPFI car just won't start.

It is easier to start in second gear than first. reverse gear is also another option to consider if you happen to get stuck on a slope where it is difficult to push forward.

I have heard that push starting is not recommended for MPFI cars..Apparently messes up the engine...not sure of the real reason though....

It is not recommended to push start MPFi cars. Thats why I have a pair of jumper cables handy in the garage at all times.

these cables can be used to to take power from the battery of another car to start your own.

Is there any reason why push starting can't be done in first, third or even fourth or fifth gear?
