Euro NCAP Ratings of cars sold in India

What is NCAP?
Quote:
The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) is a European car safety performance assessment programme founded in 1997 by the Transport Research Laboratory for the UK Department for Transport and now the standard throughout Western Europe.
Source: Wikipedia

A lot of cars sold in India are also sold in Europe, we do not have central agency in India to rate the safety of cars sold in India so NCAP is the most reliable source to compare the cars safety ratings. I have compiled a list of cars with the NCAP ratings. I hope it will be useful to fellow BHPians. Please note some cars do not come as same safety equipment as tested at time of NCAP assessment.

Since the new ratings system has changed after the year 2009, so i am have just mentioned the overall rating. The list has been compiled from the data available at NCAP website.

Car: Rating out of 5
Mercedes Benz C Class: 5
Mercedes Benz E Class: 5

LandRover Range Rover: 4
LandRover Freelander: 5

Hyundai Atoz/Santro: 3
Hyundai Getz: 4
Hyundai i10: 4
Hyundai i20: 5
Hyundai Sonata Embera: 4
Hyundai Tucson: 4

Honda CRV: 4
Honda Jazz: 5

Ford Fusion: 4

Fiat Grande Punto: 5
Fiat 500: 5

Daewoo Matiz: 3

Chevrolet Beat: 4
Chevrolet Spark: 2.5
Chevrolet Aveo: 1.5
Chevrolet Captiva: 4
Chevrolet Cruze: 5

BMW 3 Series: 5
BMW 5 Series(2004): 4
BMW X5: 5

Audi A4: 5
Audi A6: 5
Audi Q5: 5
Audi Q7: 4

Suzuki Baleno: 1.5
Suzuki A-star: 3
Suzuki Grand Vitara: 4
Suzuki Ritz: 4
Suzuki Swift: 4
Suzuki SX4 Hatchback: 4

VW Passat: 5
VW Touareg; 5

Toyota Corolla Altis: 5

Skoda Octavia: 4
Skoda Laura: 4
Skoda Fabia: 4
Skoda Superb: 5

Nissan X-Trail: 4

Mitsubishi Outlander: 4
Mitsubishi Lancer: 1.5

The newer generation cars have better rating compared to the cars they have replaced. The biggest surprises in the list are Chevrolet Aveo and Cruze, while the Aveo has been rated poor, the Cruze has the best Adult protection score in the list of 96%.

Hyundai is the only manufacturer in India which flaunts i20's 5 Star rating through commercials and Stickers on cars. Even the Basic non-Airbags equipped variants come with stickers flaunting 5 star NCAP rating.

Q5 has got a 5 star rating while the Q7 has just 4 ?

Also, SX4 hatchbacks are not sold in India.

Vehicles used for EURO NCAP does have many airbags, driver/passenger, side and curtain airbags. Many of the Maruti and Ford and Hyundai vehicles listed here doesn't even have driver/passenger airbags for all models. So how significant these results for a Maruti/Hyundai/Ford owner.

Just because Q7 was developed much earlier than the recently launched Q5. Yes, i know SX4 hatchback is not sold in India since the frontal protion of the cars is common i added the hatch to the list.

Linea is not yet tested by NCAP, maybe because its not sold in European countries where NCAP applies.

Most Cars from all the manufacturers have models which atleast have front Airbags, so the ratings are not completely irrelevant for India. The Front impact ratings are useful here.

The detailed analysis of all the cars listed here can be checked at http://www.Euroncap.com

Good job.

However ratings for most cars south of 25 lacs sold here in India will not be very relevant...

Since, most cars that boast of these ratings had 4-6 airbags, traction control, EBD, ABS, pretensioners loaded at time of testing... and most of those are not even on the option list here in India..

^^ I Agree, the most important omissions are Curtain airbags and Electronic Stability control.

Good list! But this is strictly an rough guide.

The Indian versions may have slight differences in engine, structure, bumpers, seat belt pre-tensioners, ride height etc

+ 1 to that

Even though the basic structure of the car remains the same, vehicle CoG and dynamics changes based on engine/suspension tyres et al. So this is just a rough guide.

Btw as most of the models listed in OP comes in mutiple engine variants, do all the variants get tested?

This does not actually reflect the safety of the same model sold in India. There may be a lot of mods done for cost effectiveness (should I say more profit) in our country. Expensive cars like Mercs may have retained their cars as such. But I doubt about the others. And it is going to be like this till a regulatory authority is in place to look after safety aspects in vehicles sold in our country. SAD !!

The one thing we can relate from here is the strength of the structure.

The basic Laura's (Octavia in Europe), Audi's, Suberb's, VW's all don't have alloys as standard.

Am i the only one that hates the new Suberb & Laura's alloys in India. I loved the older alloys of Superb & Laura L&K. The new ones just look too darn boring...

New Swift has 5 Star rating (www.globalsuzuki.com)

The new Suzuki Swift is due to go on sale in European countries this September. On 25 August, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) announced that it had given the Europe-specification new Swift a five-star rating (the highest possible) for crash safety.

Euro NCAP is an independent car safety assessment programme backed by seven European Governments, the European Commission and motoring and consumer organizations in every EU country. Under the assessment regime that it adopted in February 2009, Euro NCAP gives each car tested an overall rating as a number of stars from one to five. The overall rating reflects scores in four categories: adult protection, child protection, pedestrian protection, and safety assist.

The new Suzuki Swift offers increased occupant protection since it has seven airbags (including a newly adopted knee airbag) as standard equipment; a lightweight, impact-absorbing body; and front seats that reduce the risk of whiplash in the event of a rear impact. It also offers increased pedestrian protection and incorporates active-safety technologies such as an Electronic Stability Program. High performance in all four Euro NCAP test categories led to the five-star rating.
