Palio - Flickering electricals

The past few days have seen a weird problem in my Palio. The lights (Dashboard, headlights, cabin lights) of the vehicle are continuously flickering from low to high intensity. Something seems to be amiss with the electricals of the car. Cant figure out what it is.

Need your inputs on the same!

check the fuse box - check if they are plugged in properly.

Get it checked with a mechanic.

Checked all the fuses and relays. Working fine. One mechanic says alternator not charging properly. But I have my doubts!

did he check the alternator charge with and without load?

Did he check the battery terminals?

Battery terminals should be checked.

Is the flickering happening while engine is running, or while ignition is on or always?

Check if your ignition switch is properly. With use the ignition switch gather play which makes the circuit break at times causing flickering.

Try and press upon the key from various directions when the engine is started which is when the key is at its last position. Do that and get back to us.

Does it happen only when the engine is running? If so, it could be the Alternator Rectifier ('cut-out'). And no, this is not a wild guess.

Try replacing the rectifier. On a 1.2, it should be a quick-ish job.

I replaced the existing alternator with an older repaired alternator. Even that had an issue with the cut-out. The flickering has now stopped. . This is the 3rd time that the alternator is being replaced with the cut-out being at fault each time. Wonder why

I am surprised that you had to replace the whole alternator! Was there any other fault in the alternator apart from the rectifier?

Replacing the rectifier alone costs about Rs. 3000. How much did you pay to replace the alternator?

@ Vipul!

I directly replaced (Labour Rs. 300) the alternator because I have 2 alternators at my disposal. One fitted in the car and another spare one which I had got repaired earlier. Now the one that I just got removed has been given to the Mico-Bosch authorised centre @ Worli, Mumbai.

I had visited them earlier with a faulty alternator which had an issue with the cut out. Paid 1636(Spares)+ 350(Labour). Its generally only the cut out which is at fault as per them. Had a good experience with them and they also repair the fuel injection systems. So its a better alternative to the ASC's.
