+1 to GTO.

Along with the "No Smoking" sign, some pumps do have a "Switch off mobile phone" & "Turn off Engine" warning signs.

I do turn off my engine at pumps while refueling, as it is considered a "safe practice".

As for diesel engines with turbo, I guess driving the car, in low rpm's (below 1750, where the turbo kicks in for most cars) and with minimal load for about a km or two, before approaching the pump should be sufficient to cool down the turbo, so that you can safely turn off engines.

In either case, the damage to the turbo/engine, when compared to the safety(life(s)) that we compromise, is very minimal.

I was asked on more than one occasion to switch off the car and mobile phones at bunks. I do it everytime I have to fill as a safe practice. Last few years I get down to check if the fuelling is clean & honest. So I switch it off anyways.
