-   -   Advise on Bolt on turbo for Lancer diesel (https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/technical-stuff/88112-advise-bolt-turbo-lancer-diesel.html)

Two days back i was in old spares market, where i was searching for oil cooler for lancer diesel, but i did not find any, instead i found a person having turbo which is direct fit to lancer diesel, (he said it is sourced from SE asian country) he said it will cost about 20k including fitting, He said some thing have to be changed with turbo (i think he said oil pump or diesel pump calibration i suppose) all including he quoted 20k. Shall i go for it? . It includes labour and all.

He also has an Mitsubishi GDI petrol engine with transmission, its from an salvaged vehicle , but it looks almost new. I am so eager , whether this engine can be fit into lancer

The GDI mitsu engine and gearbox looked like the one in the link

GDI

its almost same(about 95% same :)) , but i have not asked about tech specs, but i am sure it may be giving much power, since it looked big and clean.

from the same shop i have seen one NTN make drive shaft for lancer, he quoted for 5k , but negotiable to some extent. it also looked clean and with original rubber boot of NOK japan make and in sealed rubber. He said it was from abroad from scrapped vehicle, but he said it may be less run , around 23-30k kms , visually it looked so clean with original colour of green (not oily or not repainted), he may be right. I was quoted for Rs.11,000 for an new pair of taiwan make drive shaft with 6month warranty. But i think this NTN shaft is better deal, since my drive shaft have to be changed , due to noise while full right turn. experts please advise

Ukkadam blokes are very cunning indeed, do take your mechanic with you to verify quality. They have everything for any car, but the reliability is a big question mark. Recently i was searching for ikon's power steering rack, and all of them looked spanking clean but was smelling kerosene and i hope you get what i mean.

Hahaha, 20k for a complete turbo setup including labour? Either stolen or junk. Probably junk. Skip it.

Question: why do you need a turbo in the first place? if it is to make your stock diesel lancer faster then you are at a very wrong decision. The lancer diesel is a manual mill, its dated and putting a turbo can cause a lot of issues, to start with overheating and axels dislodging. If you wanna keep your lancer for a good amount of time get her mechanically fit first, get new axels and get the mechanicals in place and trust me by charging you 20 k the scrap dealer will make you regular customer, all used turbos need a rebuild and without knowing much about the amount of boost you will soon have a fried engine and clutch.

An engine swap is not as easy as it sounds, if you are dead serious only then even think this route, getting a used engine from a scrap dealer is definitely the cheap but not the best option.

My post is not to discourage you, its just to let you know the possible dark side of going the scrapyard way, I would do this only if
  1. i have a spare car in my garage
  2. i have a deep pocket
  3. a lot of time at my disposal
You sound like a genuine guy, take my advise stay away from this.

Edit: Pranavt just saw your post after i posted, man you said it in a few words, I now have to seriously work on my story telling skills :P

There is no 2.0 Diesel turbo(i searched wiki), only 2 litre petrols turboed.

@ramzsys

yes, i agree with you, mostly ukkadam will have salvaged parts, but i forgot to tell tbhp that i have found those things at pudupet, chennai. also regarding Turbo in diesel, it has been fitted on few countries for 4D68 engine , 4D68T is turbo fitted for the engine which we have in present lancer diesel.

In india we are using 4D68 engine, i think it is right, correct me if something wrong.

@pranav and pramod

I am not aware of trouble in turbo, though i am aware of slight niggles in fitting turbo and oil seal leak in turbo , but i did not know that this will affect engine and clutch etc.

When googling i got some info about specifications for turbo which gives 88 Ps @4500rpm instead of our stock diesel 68 Ps @4500 rpm.

The information that you got from Google is about factory-fitted turbos, or atleast fitted by competent people. Don't do it.

Your Lancer is over 11 years old. We can safely presume she has a fair number of odometer clicks. As Pranav mentioned, please stay away. A shoddy turbo + install job will completely kill the car.

as members suggested, i have dropped the idea of fitting turbo for lancer.

But am in opinion that i can get the drive shaft of NTN make, which they say around Rs.4.5k pair. but i will take my mechanic with me to check its worthiness, since i dont want to invest Rs.11k for taiwan make.

If i get a good shaft i will post the pics

Keep in mind that it would have run 50K so you are paying half price for half life which is not exactly a steal. Not a bad idea if your car is not going to run much. Verify part# with dealer an offer him 3k.

A GDI petrol engine?! Sounds impressive, but no use in India since GDI petrol engines need high octane fuel to deliver the rated power. Infact, i'm actually skeptical how the Linea TJet 1.4 petrol would perform with low quality fuel available in some places along highways!

Also, non factory fit of components which have a big impact, like Turbo, is a bad idea since the parameters involved in improving engine efficiency and performance is very high and the strings attached are too many.
For instance, one of my acquaintances modified his BMW beamer to get more power and torque and ended up with a broken gearbox!

Rajiv,

do yourself a favor, take the car to A S S for mechanical part replacements, the spares available outside is of extremely poor quality, and i have learned it the very hard way. i had completely done my suspension outside A S S and it packed up in less than 3k KMS, when i took the car back the SA was like i told you so attitude, he told me had this been a maruti or a tata spare availability outside will not be an issue. i had to replace my front shock and this time i took it to A S S. The took exactly 45 minutes to replace the shocks and check the rear shocks. I am satisfied after that, they also gave me 6 months part replacement warranty, so now i can have a peaceful ownership experience. You can never expect lancers maintenance to be as cheap as Maruti. i am not sure if you have overhauled your diesel engine even once in you 400k journey but trust me you would have done it at least 3 times in a maruti. so here is where the quality of spares and high cost of spares in mitsu is justified. I hope you will think may be thrice before taking the al cheapo way.

Pramod,

I don't quite understand when you say that it is impossible to turbocharge a 'manual mill'.

It is *much* easier to turbocharge a diesel with a mechanical injection pump as compared to turbocharging a NA petrol.

The 4D68 engine (the diesel mill used for the lancers in India) of the lancer is very identical to the 4D68T (turbocharged version) used in the Japanese lancers.

The only difference in these 2 engines are : The pistons and the distributor pump.

After installing the turbocharger, the fuel pump needs to be recalibrated by allowing it to inject more fuel.

It is safe to install a turbo with upto 8 PSI of boost. The MHI TD-04 turbo is best suited for this application.

Rajivnoj, good that you have dropped the idea. All the trouble is not worth it. But why do you need to turbocharge a diesel Lancer? It is not slow on highway. I use a 2000 model lancer D and I touched 180 a few times. Top-end is not a problem in this car; acceleration is. It hits 180 awright, but takes some months to get to 180. You can put a brick on go pedal and go to sleep. After you finish nap, you will find the needle at 180-190. Not a slow speed even by today's standards.
