Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

I just got the delivery of my 1.3 MJD Linea.

i am observing that there is a huge kad kad kad kad noise when i accelerate at low rpms. this is more prominent during the initial few kms when the engine is cold say 5-6 kms and then reduces a lot.

is this a normal diesel clatter or valve noise ?

has anyone faced similar noises on new linea/punto?

Best is to compare with another same model car at dealer or friend's place.

This is generally a normal thing until the sound is too loud, as oil heats up it circulates around and absorbs quiet a amount of sound and engine mutes down.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

Its pretty normal for a cold diesel engine. The noise would reduce as you put on miles as all the engine parts bed in.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

During cold start every diesel engine makes that noise . I have a Swift diesel , but one engine temp guage comes on normal then it gets down . And also i have heard the same noise in toyota innova also .

Also please note dont rev the engine during cold start till the engine temp guage come on normal point .

I also leave my diesel engine running idle for three to four minutes before i put in gear and start driving , and i drive at 30 to 40 km/hr till the temp gets settle down .

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

Clatter is normal for diesel engines. But when you say Huge clatter, cant comment till we understand what does Huge mean.

As someone commented, compare it with any other MJD - either swift or vista or Linea.

Also, check that you are not lugging the engine by shifting gears too early. That also may pronounce clatter. On petrols the same driving style may work as petrol engines allow for a pretty good range of rpm. Specially for a person who has been driving petrols, driving a diesel may require some getting used to. I doubt if this is the cause, but nevertheless, wanted to mention it.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

i have driven swift vdi, linea and punto, but all had clogged miles on them.

when i accelerate say in 2nd or 3rd gear at around 1300-1500 rpms there is a cyclic sound, "kad kad kad kad kad" similar to a 2stroke sound of autorickshaw the way they sound cyclic " trrr trrr trrrrr". very difficult to explain

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

I think you are referring to kta kta kta sound which comes in particular RPM range?? If so its normal, but maybe a good idea to get it checked and bled the filter if required.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

I guess he is referring to Air Filter.

BTW our Indigo XL Grand DiCOR also has a problem of Huge Clatter at all RPMs.

Initially when the car was new, the engine was as silent as MJD. But after crossing around 1000kms or so the engine clatter has terribly increased.
The noise is identical to that of DI (Direct Injection) Sumo.
I will post a video as soon as possible so that you all get an idea about it.

The car has done around 1,24,000+ kms.

Diesel filter, if there is air in the circuit it can result in increased clatter.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

will observe more keenly today. the issue is the engine is damn silent at idling. even when i open the hood i dont hear this sound.

its only when i get inside with windows rolled up and revv at abound 1200-1500 rpm in second and 3rd gear i hear this.

Re: Huge clatter on a brand new Fiat Linea

went to the service station and took a test drive with a fiat factory trained technician. he patted me for keen observation, but ensured that this is normal clatter on brand new engines. as the carbon builds up even a little bit this sounds goes off.

he suggested me driving as it is without worry.
atlast a sigh of relief.

The operative word here is FIAT factory trained technician. Are you sure its from the FIAT factory or some dumb nut from the TATA stable.

The tata guys will cook up any cock and bull story to circumvent having to repair the car till the warranty is over.

I suggest you take it to any independent mechanic especially those dealing with repairs of diesel fuel injection equipment and have them look over it.

Under no circumstances should you trust the TATA service center. I did trust them 10 years ago and face the brunt of their stupidity to this day. I probably will have a closure of my issues on the 21st of December or 3rd of Jan next year.
