Since your car is about 11 years old, nothing can be said until an experienced mechanic can remove the housing, the rack and inspect the bushings and bearings for extent of play of the tie-rods in the assembly. Excessive play would mean repair is needed. Whether the entire steering rack has to be changed or it can be overhauled with new company specific washers, bushings, bearings or tie-rods depends on the opinion of the service station and since you have only 1 option you might as well go by their word. Once replaced and if fitted well it should last another decade.
Thanks for the note. Do you happen to know what is the cost of the Lancer Steering Rack? I see in some places its mentioned it costs around 20k and on amazon its available for US$160. One of service centers said it would cost over 50k. I am not getting a definite cost for the part. I don't want to land up paying a big amount. Most of the service centers currently don't have the steering rack.

Absolutely no idea since I don't own that brand, what makes it even more confusing is that Lancer which has been sold in less numbers in the Indian market would have even lesser inventory of spares, those who indeed possess the spares have 2 choices - either price it reasonably and dispose of the stock to a customer in need or price it at the maximum they can get knowing that the customer ultimately will come to them.

That's the possible reason why there's a price-range between 20-50k. Wouldn't it be better that the rack be checked at the service station where they asked you come to? Ultimately the exact problem has to be discovered, & for that you have to hope the service people are straightforward and tell you what it is. 50k is a steep price but its impossible to know whether its an easy fix/repairable job or if it has to be replaced until the specialist sees it.

Edit: Try a Lancer related ownership thread here, owners could help.

Re: Front wheel .steering column ticking sound.. Need urgent help!!

I can certainly confirm that this rattling noise is due to a busted driveshaft. I have an accord that completed 120,000 Kms. The right side of the car while turning makes a rattling noise. My mechanic showed me the partially cracked driveshaft which had also leaked fluids from inside the driveshaft.

Since it was normal wear I replaced them. By them I mean both the right and left.

Also due to wear I also had to replace the ball joints and tie rods.

Thanks, I wanted to check with you, how much did you spend on parts to get this fixed. Is the drive shaft a part of the steering rack assembly or its a unit in itself? Will we need to get it checked in the official service centre or can I check it with any garage guy and he should be able to spot it?

I have managed to find a person who is scrapping his lancer and hence I wanted to take the used parts and fit it onto my car as Pethkar motors has given me a quote of 30k+ for the steering rack assembly and they currently don't have stock. He mentioned that he only has the steering column readily available yesterday.

Well my Accord had crossed 122,000 kms, so it had to be replaced through normal wear and age. I had two options.

Take it to the Honda Service center or find a reliable Mechanic.

1. I did take it for a wash at honda service center and i asked them to perform a check on all parts.

They told me that the driveshafts were busted and need to be replaced immediately along with the steering rack pinnion(the entire steering assemply)

Now at Honda even if a small component which can be replaced is busted they always advice you to replace the entire assembly.

I said no thank you and walked away because they said that each drive shaft for the left and right would cost 18,000 each excluding the labor charges.

Took it to a place i found online. I was skeptical at first, but later i realised that my Accord was going to be in good hands. Not to mention this place was stacked with Mercs BMW's and Skodas. This guy specializes in those.

He quoted that the entire driveshaft would be replaced for 8,000 and also steering ball joint was needed and would set me back by 2,800.

Mind you, this guy used only Honda O.E and not even O.E.M or after markets.
