I guess you missed a opportunity. You should have trusted the ECU to do the things. The ECU was functioning obviously, after all it is not a device that eats power like, say the pump. My hypothesis is that it would have activated full functions once battery is charged sufficiently (say 10 min of idling). Anyway, no way to test it now.

As long as ECU is working, you could never get the engine over heated, it was already in limp mode.

In the cars that I have driven (one AT and one geared version). I have gone by the service advisors requests for change of battery. Any points to watch out for?
There are jump starters with some battery available in the market which will allow you to jump start the car. Kind of a mini battery and a jump starter.
