Drive safe. And I hope you keep updating this thread as the kms log on.

Many Thanks GTO, i had read the Quick first drive and first imression posted by SidIndica and subsequently Test Drive and Review posted by you before booking the car, it surely helped.
I am going to use the car for city commute and hence it proves adequate.
Yes, i do understand the safety aspect for myself and other citizens on road, so will drive safetly and will definitely keep updating the thread and contribute to this forum.
Team BHP is indeed a great place to be spending time.

A lot of people I know (including my parents) are looking at buying a small petrol car for city commuting, and this is one of the top choices on everybody's mind.

You may please take a test drive and check the car yourself. With six variants there is a lot to think over. However, i feel the top two Magna(O) and Sports are the two that are really worthy.
Do let us know your experience and decision.

Congrats Mahen :)

I have a question, you said you had a budget of 5L, I believe you would have been able to buy the i10 Magna for this price, right? what made you tilt to the EON?

Yes, i had a budget of about 5L. With good discounts i10 was fitting my budget. Also since there is one in the family i knew how good a car it is.
However, i10 Magna after all discounts would had still costed about 75K more than EON Magna(O), plus in the long run fuel efficiency is what i had in consideration for a 40Km daily city commute.
Space wise both i10 and EON are quite comparable.
Based on the above points above i tilted my decision for EON.

Adding to the above, if fuel efficeincy was to be kept aside then i was to go for Tata Vista GVX which after discount was at 5.1L with a lot more features than i10 Magna. i really liked the new Vista for all the features offered in it, ABS and EBD being more importantly present at that price.

Congrats, mahen_narang, on your Eon and I am eager to read more about your ownership experiences as you log more and more kms.

The first thing that impresses most visitors -- including my wife -- at the showroom was the Eon's "awesome looks", in comparison with the other 800CC "small and cheap" cars. That, in itself, is a huge plus for a family that intends to buy a car that has quality looks. For sure, the Eon does not look like a budget car.

While it is true that the Eon does not offer an enthusiast's engine, not many potential customers would be too concerned about the refinement performance and quality of the Eon's engine, as long as it takes them from Point A to B in relative style...relative to the segment, of course.

Having said that, what would impress the potential Eon customer (in comparison to the Eon's rivals, such as the Alto 800) are the...

* great looks
* decent power/pickup
* good AC
* great fit and finish
* great boot space
* ARAI claimed FE

Agree on both points. In my opinion, both hands should be on the steering for an long as possible. Besides other safety benefits, this exerts less pressure on both hands, instead of using merely one hand to steer the vehicle.

When I bought my i10 (Magna) in December 2010, it was priced at Rs 4.3 onroad. An i10 Era was priced at Rs 4 lakh (onroad). In contrast, the Eon Era is now available at Rs 3.45 lakh. Hence, a difference of about Rs 55,000 for a, i10 Era which has a bigger cabin as well as a bigger and better engine. Does it make make more sense? It all depends on the buyer and his/her preferences.

On the contrary, I felt that the Eon Era is the best bet, for the reasons specified above. See, if I have a budget of Rs 3.75-4 lakh, I'd rather opt for the i10 Era than the Eon Magna (O) or Sports. On the other hand, a Rs 3.45 lakh Eon Era makes great sense for me in comparison with an Alto800, even if it is priced about Rs 20K more than the Alto800.

On the other hand, I feel that the i10 is more spacious than the Eon. Besides, the i10 has better ingress/egress than the Eon.

@Mahen_narang,

How was the dealer experience?

Well, i got the delivery of my car on the agreed date but then that was without the number plate, i was told that there were some issues at the RTO office and hence the number cannot be obtained in time.
The number plate was later on fixed at my residence after 5 days. i did not drive for those 5 days as i was told that i should not be driving around with the TC number.

When the car was being inspected before delivery, i found a scratch on the front left headlight, the sales representative agreed that the same cannot be accepted. Further, no spare headlight was available with the showroom. So i was given a note stating that the headlight would be replaced with in 7 days and i dorve home the new car with a scratched headlight.
Subsequently i was asked to get the car to the showroom for changing the headlight. That's when everyone discoverd that the right tools to do so was not available in the showroom and the car is to be taken to the workshop. Fine, at the workshop the job was done but then a headlight from another EON car was removed and fitted on to my car. I wonder if the scratched headlight was put back on the other car and if its owner does not realise then they get away with it.
In all i wasted half my day in getting the headlight changed for my car.
This was a sad experience which should not have happened.

All i can say to all the new buyers check every part of the car before taking the delivery, in the excitment of taking home the new car this aspect should not be missed. Such incidents may be rare but then we would have no one but ourselves to blame later on.

Congratulations on your new car Mahen. Wish you many miles of driving pleasure.
Hows your experience with the suspension? Is it comfortable for the rear passengers on Bombay's bumpy roads? Reason for asking is that the Santro suffered from a very jumpy ride.

Congratulations & Welcome to the Forum!

Please do update thread regularly with your ride experiances, fuel consumption and service costs.

Congrats Mahen_Narang on your purchase. I have been eyeing Eon since its launch as a replacement for my aged Alto.
Your ownership experience was indeed refreshing.
How is the pickup of the car, especially when while driving you switch on the AC - is there a noticeable difference in the pickup? How about braking quality?

Thanks Lalvaz, the suspension is quite OK and comfortable for the rear seat passengers. Post rains the Mumbai roads have improved to some extent however whereever i have driven so far its been a good experience. Had one nasty dip on a manhole and immediately thanked the ground clearance of the car, the bump was bad but then nothing happened to the car and it moved on.
i cannot compare the ride quality with Santro as i have never experienced the same but no complains for sure from all the rear seat passengers i have had so far.

Thanks Rahul, i have used the Ac at the level 1 most of the times and with that there has been no significant effect on the performance of the car. The cooling is really very good. the only occasion i had to raise the Ac to elvel 2 was when i was driving at around 1400 hours on the higway with 5 passengers and that is when even the sunfilms were not done.

The pick up is really good, however since this is my first car and i am a learner, what i say here is as per my friends who have driven EON so far. incase you get a chance to test drive then please put in your views as well.

Mods note: Final warning! Back to back posts, please use Multi Quote (Quote+) instead. Thanks

Congratulations on your purchase! The moment the EON came out, it was a serious contender for the dated Alto. Having seen one in a Hyundai showroom, the build quality is much better than the Alto. Some folks say that the car feels underpowered - did you feel that when you drove it? The integrated stereo looks good. By the way, did you install the new speakers on a parcel tray, or behind the door panels?

No, i dont feel that the car is underpowered. It is apt for the space/ weight its got. Infact the weight of the car and the engine seem to match and well designed. This criteria again is important to the mileage thats being claimed for the car.

I agree the integrated sterio looks good. i got JBL CS-05 speakers fitted onto the rear side in the space already provided for it besides the parcel tray (a triangular bracket similar to those in Santro). i did not want to use the parcel tray for speakers.
The two front door speakers along with these JBL add one's are good enough for my liking in this small car.

Has anybody done a top speed check on the car? Would the handling be any different / better from an ALTO post 100 km/hr?

Congrats on the new purchase Mahan. I was looking out for a commuting vehicle to replace the WagonR for my wife. EON will be a major success - thanks to the good work put in by the H-engineers.

Would love if you could post mileage figures too. A tank-to-tank mileage run would let us know it.

What other cars are there in the 4.0 lakh(on road) range? I can Google it, but you would have done the research.

Brix, my odometer shows 491Kms and unitl now about 32.5 Lts of Petrol has gone in the car (three fills of 1000, 500 and 500 so far and the complimentary 5 Ltr Petrol during delivery of the car), that gives a calculation of about 15.1KMPL so far. Most of the drive has been in the city except one 150Km long drive on the Panvel highway. i think its too early to smile right:)?

The above is discarding the petrol present in the car as the indicator is on the last line display (graphic display for fuel in EON that i love) also Note that i am learner as yet, still time to be able to handle the car efficiently.

i got my service done today and will post that experince very soon, intend to get the tank filled tomorrow and will give a better update on mileage later on.

As regards your question for the 4L car search, well as i have posted earlier my budget was 5L+ and hence all the cars that i saw were for that range, EON was a last minute decision, hence cannot help you in this regards. But if you are interested in EON, i vote for the car but do check it out and form your own opinion.

Dont mind me asking, but why would you want to downgrade your WagonR to an Eon? Isn't it a downgrade of sorts? I agree that the Eon is competent, but can it compete with a WagonR?

mahen, congrats on your purchase. I think you have done your research well. If you want mileage, nothing better than the 3-cylinder 800ccs. But I feel you could have gone for a i10 or Ritz since you had a budget of 5L. I know for a fact that Maruti is throwing in excellent discounts for the Ritz petrol.

Brix, if you consider the discounts, I guess you could get a WagonR LXi or a A-star LXi for ~4L. I'm assuming that you have a older WagonR. The newer WagonR is totally different. Give it a try. A-star if you don't care about space and want a car which rides and handles well. If you increase your budget slightly, you could buy an i10 Era. The only advantage of going for i10 Era over WagonR would be better plastics and bigger boot. Its slightly more wider too. Else the newer WagonR has excellent rear legroom.

Misquitas, i had evaluated WagonR and in my opinion i didn't like it. The rear legroom ain't good. In terms of looks the two cars are just uncomparable. i won't call a WagonR to EON a downgrade but a decision taken based on budget and again mileage.

Thanks Blue_pulsar. i was indeed getting good discount on i10 but then again the decision making point was mileage. There is an i10 in the family and i really like it but the city mileage is not above 12 with AC switched ON. i dont know much about Ritz, a friend has a Ritz Diesal and he is all gaga about it but did not researh more about Ritz petrol.

Taking about boot space, WagonR and i10 have a boot that gives a more space in height whereas the EON has more of the floor space which seems more practical to me. Store things verticaly would end up blocking your rear view from IRVM. i suggest you may check this aspect in EON vs i10 or WagonR.

P.S. Finally learnt to use multiple quotes in the same post after two warnings stupid:
