Re: Review: BMW (F44) 2-Series GranCoupe 220d

In the 220i Sport variant, how do you turn on the rear fog light?

In the Sport variant, fog lamps are not there but rear fog light is provided.

Re: Review: BMW (F44) 2-Series GranCoupe 220d

I hope this is the right thread for this question:
A friend has the 220i M Sport Pro and I believe it comes with all run flat tyres. The car recently experienced a tyre wall damage from a minor pothole hit (we have much more treacherous ones all around Bangalore), but the stock Hankook tyre gave up. The tyre spec is 225/45/R17.

What brand and spec would be a good idea to replace all 4 tyres with ? Given this current OEM spec, this car is far from being a capable tourer on our Indian roads and conditions.

Michelin PS4 of the same spec would be a suitable replacement.

Isn’t the 45 profile an issue ? We have craters all over Bangalore!

If you switch to tubeless, it’s manageable. Just have to drive carefully. I have not faced any issues with speed breakers or bad roads on my 6GT so far - it runs 245/45F and 275/40R. Just make sure pressure is correctly maintained and you are good.

Hi, so you have a couple of options with respect to the spec :-

Option 1 - 235/45/R17
This would be my first choice, as its only slightly taller than the OE spec and will give you +5mm more sidewall as compared to OE (102mm vs 107mm).

Option 2 - 215/50/R17
This size will give the same sidewall increase (+5mm) as Option 1, but obviously slightly narrower than OE. If he's not a very aggressive driver, then he can get away with this size.

Option 3 - 225/50/17
Out of all the 3 options, this will give you the most increase in sidewall (+10mm). This size is slightly bigger than the recommended upsize of 2-3%, but you should not face any scraping issues as long as you are on the OE alloy wheels. And the speedo will under read a bit as well.

Please switch to tubeless. It's one of the best things you can do to a BMW in my opinion.

245/45 and 275/40 have much more sidewall compared to 225/45, hence not surprised you haven't faced any issues.

My first suggestion would be to switch from run flats to tubeless. Runflats with their very stiff sidewalls are prone to tire and alloy damage.

The second issue is the sidewall. With the sedans, the tires are low profile which is a problem. But nothing much can be done about this. You can go with a slight oversize like @Yakuza has suggested in Option #1. This provides a 5mm increase in sidewall while keeping the circumference error within limits. But this will also increase the tire width which will in turn increase rolling resistance. I am not sure how much this will affect performance and/or fuel efficiency.

Even with this slight increase in sidewall, while touring, one has to be careful to avoid potholes etc. If you want absolute peace of mind, the only option would be to reduce the size of alloys to 16". But that will be a very expensive change.

Regarding brands, if your friend is an aggressive driver who prefers sportiness, then the Michelin PS4. If he is looking for a balance between comfort and grip, then I have good experience with the Yoko Advan V105 and Vredestein Ultrac tires in my 3GT. I would highly recommend both of these.

Personally, I would switch to a tubeless tire of stock size from either Yoko Advan V105, or Vredestein Ultrac Vorti.

You can look for used wheel options, can get lucky if looking for smaller sizes.

I once burnt my fingers going for used alloys for the 3GT. All the wheels I received were bent and were unusable. The seller stopped responding and I had to write off the whole amount. So, my advice for a wheel change would be to buy new

Re: Review: BMW (F44) 2-Series GranCoupe 220d

I recently purchased the BMW 2 Series, and I'm pleased to report that its acceleration meets my expectations. However, I'm somewhat disappointed with its handling, particularly on roads with uneven slopes, where the vehicle steering tends to dance. This isn't the level of performance I've come to expect from a BMW. Unfortunately, I've experienced some reliability issues, including two tire blowouts and one rim damage within the first 10,000 kilometers. Despite these concerns, I'm still deciding between the Mini Cooper and the 220i, as they both fit within my budget of ₹42 lakh. Fortunately, I was able to negotiate an attractive discount, making the purchase even more appealing.
