Re: 2021 BMW X3 M40i - My "Blau Rakete" completes 32,500 miles / 52,000 km in 3 Years of ownership

Hey mobike008, thanks for the prompt reply.

Your thread is indeed a go-to place for all the information one would need to purchase a X3/X4 M40i, with so much depth and detail, along with lovely seasonings of your trips across the country.

Coming to your question as to why B58, simply put, i believe this is all the engine a petrolhead requires, especially in a country like India (since it can also run easily on 91-octane). Not only does it have crazy power, but the best part is, that it is incredibly reliable, robust & tuner-friendly, ensuring that one can never get bored with this power-train. I have been following this engine since the M340I was launched in India, and never heard anything negative about it (apart from its charge-pipe getting loose overtime, people tend to replace it with a metal or carbon-fibre one).

Personally, I believe X3/X4 M40i, is the best vehicle that manages power-dynamics and everyday usability in a beautiful high ground clearance India-friendly package, ensuring performance that can be used every day.

It is also the last generation of BMW's which still has its priorities-straight, performance & proportional looks over gimmicks like television-sized touch screens & drop-dead ugly looks. It is a car-engine combo to buy-keep forever and retire with. I plan to own one someday, hence have started to collect any related information on it.

Thank you. I love sharing these updates as they will also serve as great memories to me one day in the future.

Good Points. Yes, B58 is all the power you need for road usage and all BMW enthusiasts are head over heels in love with a B58. It’s almost unreal and haven’t see any other car engine get so much love till date. Everyone who drives it for a short time becomes a raging fan which no engine in the automotive world can accomplish at this price-point.

You are right, B58 can go up to 700 horsepower with a simple tune, exhaust and intake changes without any issues on performance and reliability.

No clue about “Charge Pipe” getting loose as I have never come across any such instance in any of the forums that I follow. Maybe, it’s India-specific and due to road conditions there.

Oh yeah. I have driven the sedan version and would choose the X3M40i any day over it as you get the same performance in a more comfortable fashion as my usage for cars is not weekend or track. I buy cars to drive them everywhere and irrespective of weather conditions and not baby them or keep it for weekend spins.

Haha! I would not go that far and make that comment. The New M cars are absolutely phenomenal from a performance perspectives like the M3/M4. I particularly love the M4 and they come in some gorgeous shades and that grille is something you get used it.

I hate the new grille language only in BMW SUV’s which looks absolutely hideous.

Good to see a B58 lover who has same passion for this engine. Cheers Mate !!

Hey mobike008, sorry for the late reply.

You are absolutely right about the M3/M4, being very good performance machines, but that is because they are of the earlier generation G80. You should just look at what BMW is planning for the new gen 3/4 series, and you will puke.

Hence, I said, the earlier generations are the last best BMW's remaining, and yours is one of them.

BMW X2 228i Joins the family.

My sister lives in Boston, MA and drives a BMW X5 50i (V8, 450 HP) for the last 4 years and loves her Bimmer despite being a gas guzzler (She gets 14mpg to 20mpg and an average of about 18mpg). Well, she is partly to be blamed as she is also an aggressive driver is always driving as if she is missing her flight.

Like me, she is totally enamored with a BMW. So, what does she do?

She adds another BMW to the fleet and bought a BMW X2 28i which is a 2.0 liter, 228 horsepower cute little compact SUV for her girls (they currently drive a Toyota Corolla). My nieces are 20 & 18 years old and they are super excited to join the BMW family as they got the "taste of BMW blood" from their mom's car.

She paid cash over the weekend to Tully BMW in New Hampshire and hopefully will get delivery by this Saturday when the Massachusetts plates are ready.

And, Just for perspective, I was driving a Maruti 800 when I was my nieces age. Lol!

Weather is becoming glorious. I saw that there are no rains for the next one-week so I decided to get the Blau Rakete a lovely wash, interior vacuuming.

Now I need to spend some time and polish the interiors and apply some tire shine.

She is good for another month or so.

Had two questions about your X3
When you changed tires to non RFTs did you have any concerns from the shop about not getting warranty honored? I went to check prices in Costco Canada and they are telling me that if I get non RFTs, then they will not honor warranty in case there is a flat. While RFTs can be driven for few miles with a flat, if a Costco center is not nearby I'm not sure how they would fix/replace the tire in that situation.

Second is whether you got any drivetrain malfunction warnings anytime in last 3 yrs. I heard that there is some s/w update, but mentioned only in a TSB, so it would not be a default OTA update.

Firstly, Why would any shop other than BMW dealership bring up the point or question about the warranty aspect? If it's just a friendly warning or advice. I suggest- Ignore.

I have visited Costco multiple times and even selected the same non-RFT tires (Michelin Pilot AS 4) from them and thought of getting it done there as it was close to home as we get free “Tire Rotations” “ Air” “Puncture Repair” for the life of the tires. They had a deal on Michelins (Some $50/tire off) too.

Well, now that’s something even the others (Discount Tire, Tire Rack) also match. Price and Freebies.

I decided to get it installed at Discount Tire in Portland, OR as I would save on tax ($150 worth) and clubbed it with other tax free purchases during that trip. I have a discount tire near home as well and same freebies apply here as well and at any discount tire store across USA so convenience wise, it was perfect.

Finally, nobody ever brought up the topic of warranty during any of my conversations.

I was scheduled for a 1-hour appointment at Discount Tire store in Portland.

They replaced by RFT with Non-RFT Michelins in about 40-mins and since then have not faced a single issue (Onboard computer) nor with the tires (touchwood).

I have never ever received any warnings for my BMW’s onboard computer for any malfunction EVER till date. Hope this beautiful run continues. Touchwood, again.

Hope this helps!

I too thought it was just advise but the Costco guy kept saying if you get a puncture we won't fix it or honor warranty. His logic was that with RFT you can drive to Costco and get tire replaced and with non RFT, you can't drive. I'm not sure how this logic of warranty work on a stock non RFT tire for brands like Honda or Toyota. Just because they have a spare doesn't mean the driver will change to donut and can't call a tow truck. And anyone who drives on flat tire will not only damage the tire, but also rims and alignment. I too went to Costco due to the hazard warranty and other benefits for 5 yrs, but thinking that I have to look for other shops. We don't have DT or TR here or any of the other larger retailers like US that have crazy offers.

I'm also planning to change to the Michelin ones but heard that they don't feel planted on dry surfaces and are a bit soft. Has your experience changed from the initial few days?

are you planning on keeping any spare wheel, slime or any other repair kit with you in the car, unless you have RSA or AAA membership.

This question was not for the tires. Some rats/mice chewed up the wires in my X3 and while the mechanic fixed the problem, he said the drivetrain malfunction is something to do with variable valve timing software and BMW released a TSB to get the software updated in case someone gets a warning. He said many 2018/2019 have got this issue but since your's is 2021, it may already have the patch or the dealer might have updated it during your free services. My X3 is 6 yrs old and first 5 yrs were without any issue and in the last few months it's only the wiring and drivetrain warning issue that has come up.

There are only 2 tires that I considered and both are supposed to be awesome as per reviews.

Michelin Pilot 4 AS vs. Conti DSW06 (Michelin won by a fair margin)

Michelin Pilot All Season 4 are one of the best tires for BMW. It's a performance oriented AS tires and best suited for Dry, Rain and Wet surfaces. The tires feel much better than Pirellii RFT's and have good grip in wet and dry surfaces. They are lot silent too. The best part, the fuel efficiency has definitely gone up by 2-3 mpg.

No plans for any spare tire. I will take my risk when and, if a flat happens.

Cheers!

My 18-year old niece finally becomes a proud Bimmer owner.

She has already clocked 500 miles in a week showing off her car to her school friends and taking them out for rides around Boston.

The excitement is quite evident on the face.

Is that a pre-owned car? Because the interiors look atleast a generation old and the 2024 X2 looks very different to this

Re: 2021 BMW X3 M40i - My "Blau Rakete" completes 32,500 miles / 52,000 km in 3 Years of ownership

Excited to see the "Bread & Butter" and the most sold BMW vehicle from their entire line-up- BMW X3 is getting into it's 4th generation known as "G45" will debut as a 2025 model and hopefully should go on sale in the US later this year.

BMW has retained the same B58 engine and making it more powerful and also doing some major changes to their chassis to make it more lively from its handling perspective.

BMW X3 M40i will now be known as BMW X3 M50 in line with it's power bump.

Here is a camaflouged BMW X3 M50 getting tested on track and off-road.

Love the new flat bottom wheel, will come with iDrive 9 and larger screen as seen in all new BMW's.

BMW X3 M50 technical improvements explained :

I'm now so tempted to upgrade this already amazing car with an even better version of itself.
