![]() I am really impressed by your write-up - right from why you bought, the booking-test drive-delivery process, the review, accessorizing from basic stuff to serious stuff, and all the milestones through the process. I came across your thread while rummaging through for relevant information and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The review is nothing short of a virtual experience. Quote:

This 4x4 bug has bit me real hard and there seems to be no end to accessories... I ordered 4 iridium tip NGK spark plugs. It's not heavy either. T-slots are not there but i feel, it's manageable. Within a day I found one point that I didn't like. The roof carrier creates a disturbing wind noise even at 40kmph! It's so strong that I felt it is holding the car back! Some people had wrapped a cord to reduce the noise while some other carriers had built-in wind deflectors. I studied a bit and then went to Swastikfabs (Vijay) and gave them a design of a wind deflector and asked if they can fabricate. Vijay asked me to drop the vehicle for couple of days and he'll figure out a wind deflector. He came up with a very simple design (shows his experience) yet a very effective design. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was looking for a rockslider cum side step since quite sometime and hadn't found a good one in the market. Finally he achieved a design which was functional, strong and good looking too. I was happy with the final result, the mounting, aesthetic and functional aspects have been taken care of. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I got the plastic pipe of the snorkel to a SS pipe. Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | Re: Jungle, Interstate or Metro…No Worry | The story of our Maruti Jimny AT I have not been very active for sometime now and now I realize that its already been 6 months since I last updated this thread (May 2024)! Boy...in hindsight, there have been so many changes in these months! The Odo was at 14000kms back then and now it is at 33000kms. That's 19000kms in 6 months which included:
When the car completed 1 year, it had crossed 28000kms...the fastest of any of my cars that I have owned so far. I made a quick short video for the occasion. During the Spiti trip, I had noticed two issues with the car. The suspension would become so soft that the car used to roll sideways like a boat on highways even with small undulations and it used to take too long to settle down. another issue we noticed was the infamous "death wobble" - The steering wheel and the front tyres would wobble violently when we brake from a speed of around 80kmph. Soon after the Spiti Road trip, I got the 20000kms first paid service at my regular Kalyani Motors near my home. The service costed me ₹6,800/-. Both the above mentioned issues were notified but they couldn't trace the root cause. Later I learnt from reading on the internet that the stock suspension behaves like this after 15000kms and especially at high temperatures. During the independence day long weekend, I had planned a 4-day long trip. On day 3 of the trip I missed a tree trunk both in the mirror and the reverse camera. It resulted in a dent on the rear top corner of the car. The day 4 when I was returning home, A stone from a truck hit the windshield and took away a big chip! ![]() The trunk that did the damage ![]() The Damage ![]() Stone hit Both of these damages were claimed under 2 separate insurance claims. Kalyani motors carried out these works with overall billing of around ₹26,000 of which I had to pay ₹6,400. on 15th September, there was an Exclusive Jimny service camp organized by Mandovi motors and I got the 30000kms service on that day when the odo was 28500kms. During this service, I also got the ENV6 DOT5 Bosch Brake fluid which improved the braking performance by a bit ![]() The service camp ![]() ENV6 DOT5 Brake fluid During this service camp, I mentioned the "Death wobble" issue again and there were many others too with this issue. As a group, it was also escalated to MSIL. This is a known issue of Jimny globally and we got a solution quickly. The source is supposed to be a warped brake disc and an issue with the kingpins. There is a slight warp in the disc. Not exactly as much as you can see in the picture below but we can make out a small warp with our eyes. MSIL replaced 4 Kingpins and 2 Disc rotors under warranty. I got this done last week. The wobble is gone after that. I hope the issue doesn't surface again. ![]() The replaced parts ![]() The warped Disc Modifications and accessoriesJust before the Spiti trip, I had got the Bimbra rear parcel shelf installed. This is made from Stainless steel with a linex coating. This helps us pack luggage in two levels and also hide the luggage in the boot from being seen from the side glass. But it's not possible anymore to take out things in the boot from inside. Although it is nice overall, I would still prefer a parcel tray that can be removed quickly and is much lighter. ![]() Rear parcel tray I had ordered a coupler from Japan that disables the annoying Start/Stop system. The coupler fools the ECU that the bonnet is open. The ECU thinks that the car is in service mode and hence the start stop function doesn't work. While the coupler was doing what it was meant to do, it had couple of other side effects. 1 The locking and unlocking beeps increased because it thinks bumper is not closed. 2 the start stop tell tale on the MID keeps on Blinking in yellow. While the beeps can be completely turned off, the second side effect was bugging me a lot. So I removed the coupler. ![]() The coupler. You can see the stock one to the left As part of preparation for the Spiti trip, I added three camera mounting points using Swastikfabs antenna mounts. two on each side of the bonnet and one at the rear just above the spare wheel. These points came in very handy to mount, Gopros, Insta 360s and mobile phone externally when driving the vehicle. ![]() RAM mounts ![]() more RAM mounts Here you can see the latest Hella light as the previous one was too not of great quality During the Spiti trip, I got the spare wheel mounted Long haul fuel tanks for carrying additional 10 litres of fuel. ![]() Long haul fuel tank on the spare wheel ![]() After removal, this is what remain on the spare wheel mount After I came back from my Spiti trip, I got the Bimbra Ladder installed. I had also ordered the four corner guards, an antenna and an antenna mount from Amazon Japan hoping to get it before the trip. It had arrived when we were in Gurugram. I got those guards installed too. During installation, we realized that the antenna mount interferes with the ladder, and hence couldn't install the antenna mount. ![]() The Ladder and corner guards As an alternative, I gave a very simple design for an antenna mount to Swastikfabs which could be fixed to the ladder. They made it for me and after having it for a week, I realized it was colliding with the corner guards when the boot door was opened. Fortunately I had the guard by then or else the body panel would've got a ding! Vijay at Swastikfabs requested me to give him some time for this. He fabricated a nice mount some days later. Not only does it not touch any part of the car, but we can also adjust the angle during installation. I have installed the antenna to it but have not connected it further anywhere. The stock antenna is still on the roof and functional. The idea is to buy a base station radio and connect to this at a later point of time. ![]() Antenna with Antenna mount fixed to the ladder Then, I added 2 more Ram mount points inside just below the main navigation screen. With this, I can actually place as many as 5 phones in the front screen and 1 in the rear screen! Sometimes these 3 ram mounts in the front also come in handy to hang small packets ![]() ![]() Some more RAM mounts SimplyJimny had made differential Breathers for the Jimny that helps in reducing water ingress to differentials. There was no stock when I checked but one of the members had ordered it but was lying unused. He was ok to sell it if I was interested. Although I don't intend to do any deep water wading, better safe than sorry I felt and I added it too During the Spiti trip, we also found that even with the stock headlights on, there were some dark patches. An auxiliary light was needed to illuminate those areas. So, went to Swastikfabs and got a pair of Aux light mounts and Hella Black magic cube lights installed. In the second half of September, I added one more Aux light at Swastikfabs. This time it was the Hella Lightbar that sits hidden behind the grill and the light throw is awesome for those long night time highway drives. ![]() Let there be light Because of the near vertical windshield in the Jimny it is prone to more bug hits. We experienced this very much on the Yamuna expressway. Also any stone hit will have more impact due to the angle. After having changed the windshield for this, I decided to get myself a bug deflector. I didn't want something loud. So I went for a simple design. So far it seems to be working. ![]() Bug deflector After the wobbling experienced in my Spiti trip, I really wanted to change the suspension. In June, Swastik got both Old Man Emu suspension kit and Bilstein shocks + Eibach springs suspension kits in stock. The OME kit gives a 4" inch and it comes along with panhard rod correction kit too.
![]() Bilsteins+Eibach ![]() Panhard Rod correction adapter The absence of a seat height adjuster had been bothering my wife a lot as the standard height was too low for her height. I got the 4xforza height increasing kit. They had 40mm and 25mm and I opted for 40mm. The package contains four 40mm bushes with long bolts. All we have to do is remove the 4 bolts holding the seat, put the bush under the seat rail and the floor and use the longer bolts to fix the seat back. It was a simple DIY installation. After this, my wife found it very comfortable to view. However, my ergonomics were spoilt as all the switches and other things like the armrest also went down by 40mm in relation to the seat. it took me almost a month to get used to the new position. Later, I got one Bimbra front bash plate installed which gave addition underbody protection ![]() Front Bash plate The aftermarket armrest that I had, was mounted on the floorboard cup holder. While the armrest was good enough for it's price point, I felt the quality can still be improved. I had come across one good armrest in an online portal of UK some months ago. I decided to buy it and ordered it and it was delivered in 4 days straight from UK. I made a DIY installation and now it's perfect. I ended up paying a big duty though. Apart from the better quality, this armrest solved one major ergonomic problem after I increased the seat height. Since this armrest is mounted on to the seat frame, it was the right height in relation to the seat. Additionally the old armrest had a bottle holder to compensate for the bottle holder that it takes up for installation. That bottle holder was hitting the feet of rear passengers. With the new armrest, I can use the stock bottle holders in the centre console ![]() New Armrest I sold the used Armrest to another Jimny owner ![]() Old Armrest packed and sold The Jimny has a small quirky design issue. A portion of the rear mudguard is part of the door. This means that any muck during rains is also plastered under the door. Many a times when you are getting in or getting out of the car, this comes in contact with your clothing. ![]() The problem. See the extreme left of the image To avoid this, a vendor in Coimbatore has designed a Fiberglass guard that is fixed to the wheel arch. Tata Hexa also has this issue and this vendor had initially made it for that. with that experience, he made it for Jimny too. Had heard good feedback and when I saw it on another Jimny in the service camp, it looked really nice. So I ordered it and got it installed. ![]() Nice solution I thought However, pretty soon I realized that this part only reduced the problem but did not eliminate it. In fact the issue was shifted from under the door to over this new guard. The probability of soiling your clothing is still present. Aesthetically it looks good, so I've left it as it is. I might remove it someday soon. ![]() Did not solve the issue really The horn of the Jimny was not bad but everything from Swift to Vitara from Maruti had the same horn, I wanted something good but not loud. I saw one on another Jimny during the service camp and I liked it very much. I ordered the same from Amazon Japan and got it Installed. The Simply Jimny group had made a horn coupler for this horn so that there is no need to cut/splice any wires. I bought that to fix this ![]() Nice dual tone horn. consumes very less power too Recently my sister was returning from the US and I took this opportunity to order one gadget - The dashcam. Initially I had the single channel Dashcam on the Jimny from the Alto it replaced. Now I got myself a Thinkware 5-Channel dashcam - One front windshield camera facing outside, One rear camera, One front windshield inside facing IR camera and two external rear facing side cams mounted on the front fender. The front outside facing and the front inside facing is pretty easy and both are stuck to the front windshield. Wiring for the rear camera is a little tricky in the Jimny because of the metal sideways opening of the door. Wiring was routed alongside the defogger connection and then goes on the border of the glass opening ![]() One of the two external side cams ![]() Rear camera ![]() Wiring routing for the rear camera Brakes have never been the strong point of the Jimny. Just last week, I got a Brembo brake kit which includes 2 discs, 2 pads and 2 rear brake shoes. Since the warranty replaced Discs are still new, I'm yet to install them. I want to ensure that the recent stock disc change under warranty for the wobbling issue has indeed removed the death wobble. only after that I'll change to the Brembos with better braking performance. | Re: Jungle, Interstate or Metro…No Worry | The story of our Maruti Jimny AT Hey Hemanth, Karthik here from SJ group. I had couple of questions but forgot to ask you yesterday when we met for Achalu beta drive. Did you instal Brembo brake pads?. Whats your feed back?. Also are you planning to install steel braided brake lines? 2. Are your rock sliders chassis mounted?. What is the impact in terms of ground clearance (I believe you also don't have a lift). |

![]() I ordered the Brembo brake set but by the time they arrived, I got the warranty replacement of the discs and Kingpins done at Nexa (on Oct 30th) to solve the steering wobbling issue. The ODO was at around 32500kms. I wanted to be absolutely sure that the disc and kingpin replacement will solve the wobble issue. I decided to change it after driving some days and then move over to the Brembos. The Brembos are lying unopened. Have driven 2000+kms after the warranty replacement and so far haven't seen any wobble issue. I have also ordered the longer differential breather tubes and the braided brake lines. Will install all together. Regarding rocksliders...Yes they are chassis mounted. I haven't measured but looking at the pipes, it must be around 1 to 2 inches below the skirtline. I have the bilstein+eibach combo which had given a little over an inch lift. So nett, there's no loss of GC. | |

Distinguished - BHPian ![]() ![]() | Re: Jungle, Interstate or Metro…No Worry | The story of our Maruti Jimny AT Cars like the Jimny has a major drawback…the accessorizing never stop!!! Here' a list of accessories that have been added in the last few months Before the Spiti Trip in May 2024, I had added one more accessory. I had seen an ad by a company called Keydroid which convert your regular key into a smartkey. The Jimny’s key was quite boring for me so decided to check this out. I went to their store near Electonic city and understood the process. It was not a major rework but the PCB from inside the stock key fob would be transferred to their key fob. They had different option of keys carrying in designs and functionalities depending on what what the car can support too. For the Jimny, not much is possible, so I went with their basic key. It is a nice oval touchscreen key fob with a few buttons on the side. It has many options and settings and one major functionality that was good was the proximity lock and unlock. For this I had to plug a transponder to the OBDII port. The key is a head turner as well now. ![]() The Smartkey The one big disadvantage of this key is that there is no physical key and if the battery runs out, there is no way to use the physical key. However, I’m pleasantly surprised at the battery life. I changed it fully when I got it in May 2024. It is still running. That’s 10 months and still counting! another downside which I after a few days of usage, The proximity lock started irritating me as the car locks and unlocks multiple time especially and the borders of it’s proximity range. I hence removed the OBD. I’m using it like a good looking normal key fob only. During the Spiti Trip, I had seen that Vikram’s car (The Jimny that we had shared) had a very strong Magnetic action cam mount. I purchased that so that I could fix it on any metallic surface and fix my action cam ![]() Magnetic mount The differential guard that I had got when the vehicle was new was not a good design. IT was mounted directly onto the differential. Any hit to the guard would damage the very part that it is supposed to protect. Hence I decided to change it. 4xForza had a good one which is mounted on the axle than to the differential itself. ![]() Differential guard by 4xforza Another aesthetic addition was a puddle lamp/welcome lamp. The best thing about this is that it runs on batteries and no wiring is needed. It has a sensor which ensures that the light is off when the door is closed and lights on only when the door is open and only when it is dark outside. ![]() The real off-roader Puddle lamp In January, I decided to add a radio base station. After a lot of reading and reviews from a few people, I ordered the Sanchar dual mode Base station. I selected this because it is very compact in size and it allows me to use a sim card as well for connectivity. I’m not a HAM operator but I intend to learn some basics with this. After evaluating multiple locations for fixing this inside the car, I finally got it fixed just under the centre screen. I’ll be designing a mount so that the mic also can be mounted there. currently it is just placed in the cubby hole in front of the gear selector. ![]() Sanchar Base station On one of the weekends, I was lying idle. I went to JC road and added a few stickers and badges on the car. I got the smoke wrapping on the front logo on the grille; The indicators on the mirrors also got the same treatment. ![]() Smoked mirror indicators ![]() Smoked logo Inspired by the Conqueror version of Jimny that was showcased in the Auto expo, I added the 4x4 badges on the rear doors. It’s cut from acrylic material. ![]() 4x4 logo on the door The same acrylic material was used to add a Jimny logo in black removing the chrome stock logo. I made the Y in yellow just to add a contrast. Not liking it very much though…have a Black yellow too, will change it to black. ![]() Black Jimny logo with an Yellow Y. In addition, I added 3 rhinos (one on the rear and two on the fenders) just above the indicators. ![]() The cute little Rhino While I’ve been accessorizing the car, it’s not just all show and no go. I’ve been driving it quite a lot both on and off road. It is munching miles faster than any of my car In November, I went along with a few other Jimnys on a Trail drive near Magadi ![]() Roll Angle ![]() Pitch Angle First week of December, I drove up the Achchalu Betta in Kanakapura along with a few other Jimnys ![]() The trail ![]() The lateral angle For the Christhmas holidays, we drove to our native village in Sakaleshapura and I was driving around some trails around ![]() Der beste oder nein ![]() Making its own way ![]() Poser For the New year holidays, we went to Kodagu for 3 days along with two other cars. Since it was with 4 full families…it was only a trip on the road. ![]() Welcome to Kodagu ![]() Coffee Land On 25th January, a group of Jimnys got together for an off-road training session by the experienced off roader Mr. Chandramouli in his farm. It is a nice obstacle course created by him that helped us understand the nuances of off roading. He not only gave us expert instructions, he also showed us a demo in a Thar. This enabled us to learn more about our cars and our skills, it showed the difference in the cars as well. ![]() The guide ![]() Black with red accents ![]() Black on Yellow On the republic day, there was a guided off-road drive even drive organized by Robusta Sports Academy at Kodagu. It took us deep into some Coffee estates of Kodagu with some nice natural trails involving steep gradients, narrow trails, water crossings, rocky climb etc. Cars ranging from Toyota Hilux, classic Mahindras, Thars, Gurkhas, Gypsys and Jimnys were in attendance and it was nice event which challenged both the driver and the car. ![]() Splash! It also had a good man made obstacle course. In one of the obstacle, my car got beached twice (mainly due to the rockslider! I had to jump over it to clear it. I thoroughly enjoyed the day to put it lightly. ![]() Articulation at it's best ![]() Beached! ![]() Up up and away! On February 2nd, a group of Jimnys and Gypsys got together to drive on a controlled private off-road trail (Dirt Devil Adventures) near Ramanagara. The course had probably the steepest gradients I’ve driven the car on. With good spotters, I could drive on some good obstacles testing the skill of the driver and the limits of approach, departure and breakover angles. Here again the Rocksliders did scrape but I have it for a different reason altogether and the reduced GC is something I’m ok with. ![]() Sometimes, all you need is a different perspective ![]() The perspective changes everything! ![]() Life from a whole new angle ![]() Different angles reveal different worlds The car has crossed 38500 kms as of today. | Re: Jungle, Interstate or Metro…No Worry | The story of our Maruti Jimny AT I was going through a random thread when I saw this at the bottom of the page. It led me to your Jimny thread. I thought you had turned into a Doc Ock type of guy surrounded by 8 Jimnys. I doubt the missus is going to let me buy another car so I'll just have to pick up one of the miniatures (for the moment). Where did you get the one with the most accurate details? Last edited by Roy.S : 26th March 2025 at 12:53. Reason: Adding a line |
