Re: Possessing a childhood dream | Tata Sierra

Some cars leave an impression. A few carve a lifelong memory. And for me, the TATA Sierra was love at first sight — my automotive soulmate, ever since childhood.

My first brush with this iconic machine was on the silver screen. I still vividly remember watching Sunny Deol blaze through action scenes in the 90s film Ziddi, tearing through roads in a rugged white Tata Sierra. As a young kid, that image stuck — the sheer muscle, those bold curves, and those unforgettable rear quarter glass panels. It wasn’t just a car; it looked like a fortress on wheels.

Soon after, a close relative brought home a white Sierra. From the moment I stepped inside, I was hooked. Every chance I got to sit in it, I’d be on cloud nine — pretending to drive, soaking in the vibes of something that felt ahead of its time. And to complete the obsession, I even had a toy Sierra — bright red with jet-black tints on the rear glass, a proud member of my childhood toy fleet.

What truly made the Sierra stand out for me:
• That muscular, wide-shouldered stance — it looked like it could climb mountains and rule highways alike.
• The wraparound rear glass windows — so unique, giving it a bold character unlike anything else on Indian roads.
• And most importantly, the aura — it had presence, personality, and purpose.

Even today, whenever I spot an old Sierra on the road (a rare sight now), my heart skips a beat. It wasn’t just a car — it was a statement, a dream, and to many of us 90s kids, the original SUV before SUVs became a trend.

Tata Motors is bringing back the Sierra close to its original spirit, you can bet I’ll be first in line to explore this car — not just to relive a memory, but to reclaim a piece of my childhood.

@123.Rishabh - impressive work, I stay in sector 51 GGN, could recognize the workshop etc. What's your plan with paperwork, since this is not road legal with NGT orders.

Thanks !, The vehicle is PB registered, I just will pay the remaining green tax, renew the fitness and transfer it in my name. And this will be like a showcar limited to very occasional short morning drives due to NGT limitations in NCR.

Re: Possessing a childhood dream | Tata Sierra

Sharing a small update regarding the Tyres,
The leaflet which i have shows the tyres as 215/75/R15, as per some sources it was updated at a later date, whereas the vehicle originally came with 195/80/R15. Was lucky enough to find a video of the absolute initial brochure which confirmed this size.
In order to maintain the originality I will be going with the initial brochure spec of 195/80/R15.

This is the stock tyre size of Jimny, Should be quite easy and cheap to procure because almost every Jimny owner wishes to get rid of stock tyres and almost nothing is quoted for the stock ones.

Re: Possessing a childhood dream | Tata Sierra

Due to lack of time I have not been able to give time to the vehicle and also update the thread. Currently the car is in its final fitting phase and sharing the next set of updates with some images.

Here are the pictures after the paintjob

Also got it refulled on the way back from the paint booth.

After this started to work on the interiors,
Sidindica was helpful in sourcing me a softcopy of the 1998 Autocar India Sierra turbo review (Has the same Seat pattern & upholstery as the initial car)

But to our surprise, as we removed the old brown velvet upholstery we were shocked to see the original black leather upholstery and the same pattern which we were planning to use from the magazine images

Here is the sample of the reupholstered seat base, Apart from this, have selected a grey velvet material for the roof liner.

Waiting for the interior work to be completed with a modern Fortuner (White polythene on the roof was to protect from pigeon poop)

Apart from this, paid some attention to smaller things
New Telco hood ornament was not available, so I painted the same in the shade similar to the remaining colored part in it using a syringe and later on clear coated it with spray.

Was lucky to find Tata Gurkha UK Spec wheel covers. They were new but paint was in a very bad shape due to poor storage and age, gave them a good respray and also cleaned and reinstalled the export spec emblems.

Here is a reference pic of the UK Spec Gurkha AD with the same wheel covers.

Post this we installed the new tyres, the old ones were in a really bad shape due to age and were also wider and same as the turbo spec.

New tyres installed and now standing tall with my Roxx. (Black polythene on the hood was to protect from pigeon poop)

Found a rendered image on insta which is of the exact same spec (door and side beadings not a part of the original car), I wish this project comes out like this after the final fitting and polishing process. Will keep updating.

Re: Possessing a childhood dream | Tata Sierra

Thanks Vinod & Dippy !

I also had some of the final German Red paint remaining, so took my plastic toy Sierra and painted it with the same color and the interiors to black to match the actual car.

Re: Possessing a childhood dream | Tata Sierra

Congratulations!!!

A wonderful effort!
The Sierra is and will remain my favorite car. Became my ride after dad bought a safari. Handled better than the safari too.
