The New Swift

Had an opputunity to have a close look at Swift vehicle in the Tokyo Motor Show. Just summing up my impressions. There were no test drives offered at the Motor show.

Exteriors
Looks really Compact. Neat lines and a bit stubby at the back. Looks like suzuki has taken a lot of cues from mini cooper. I was expecting a larget car after reading the Overdrive. They said it has the space like the new City. Its no where near that anway.Just cant compare these two and they are in 2 different segments. It is much in the class of Getz and Palio but looks compact than both these cars

Build

Looks build for europe but doesnt appear as solid as a palio or a getz still there is some tinny ness if i can call so , but yes the doors do close with assuring thud but the
degree of "thud" is not in the class of plaio and Getz. With its 1.5 ltr engine the car weighs 1030 Kg

Interiors
I got to see the Interiors on the Japanese and European spe cars. Ofcourse they are much better than what we get to see in our cars but will have to wait and see how much of it *maruti retains them for India (all in the name of cost cutting)
Though the car looks compact than the Palio/Getz it almost has the same space as palio.Overall interior space should be a shade less than the Palio. It is almost as easy
to get in and out as say a wagon R or a Hyundai satro and the dash is pretty small compared to the palio and the Getz.

Interior Shot from the rear seats

The boot too looked pretty small

Instrument Cluster

The Dash

The front right seat had a swivel feature but i am not sure if this going to be contunued in India. The rear seat is a 40:60 fold

The rear leg room is a shade less than Palio and ofcourse mcuh less than the Getz

Engine Options
I couldnt get much Details on the Diesel option so expect it to be launced a little later than the petrol ones. The two otions of petrol are 1.3 ltr 91 ps and 1.5 ltr 110 PS VVT engine.

The engine bay with 1.5 ltr VVT DOHC engine

Over all this car looks good and has great interiors though the interior space is sligthly less than the what competetion offers in India. If priced from 4.1 to 4.6 Ex-shr it could
expand the market rather than killing the competetion.Getz will have real competetion.

If only Fiat could wake up, their product still has the pottential to match up with these new gen cars..

Good job DOHC

Car looks quite nice. There seems to be oodles of space and equipment. The swivel chair is a nice concept. Though i guess it won't make it here like u mentioned as well. Good though for the handicapped and aged.

The product seems good for India, will it sell is something else. But since its Maruti and a small car, i guess it would.

The engines will be the same. Diesel is in 2006 at the earliest. I doubt the 1.6 will be launched... but anything could be possible with a revived Maruti

Revv

P.S. Nice leggy chic. Took her on a date?

Great report DOCH, even beat the Indian mags to it. Good pictures of the interiors.

When I first saw the pics of the swift in the mags here, I thought it would be the size of the Getz, however your pictures and report say otherwise. I personally love the look of that front end, very chic. The dash though looks quite ugly with acres of black plastic, but I guess thats expected in a car of this size.

Any other scoops for us?

It looks great on the outside, but the interiors..? Acres of drab dark plastic and cloth? Maruti, PLEASE, give us some brighter COLOURFUL interior fabrics when you bring the Swift to India.

The pricing is going to be parallel to that of the Getz. This is wat BSM has put on paper of their mag!!

They have new 1.5 VVT engine thats good for 106 PS in Tokyo, its different from the baleno engine (may be a later generation engine) Even if they detune it, this VVT engine should be the first in its class to offer the variable valve time feature

Hi All,

A friend of mine works in MUL, & as per Him Swift will be launched some time in April & it will be in the % lac bracket. Also he says in will be very 'Unlike Maruti' in interiors & also will host some features like Auto A/C which r currently in higher segment cars. Also it'll be only in 1.3 ltr engine, & he says it'll smoke the competiotion
