I agree but this alone is may not be adequate...
Disclaimer: I have found no reference to this and below is purely my science fiction.
Increased pollution primarily of carbon particles - black smoke indicates in complete combustion.
Incomplete combustion indicates less power than would have been generated if that much fuel was fully burnt.
Common Rail technology, Turbo charger, Intercooler all concentrate on maximizing combustion while commom rail also looks at reducing explosiveness (resulting in lesser noise)
Given the ECU controls fuel injection if it is confused bad FE is likely.
So in short i agree with you that the ECU is not very smart...
1. The ECU cannot over come bad driving style to give FE but can reward good style with mind blowing FE (jazzy2cool is a case in point)
2. The ECU cannot control black smoke when using premium fuel (and coupled with bad driving, i guess). Leads me to believe that it has been "detuned" for "Indian" conditions.
Farhan, i will one day report FE of 20 kmpl just you wait (if i have not already destroyed my engine that is :p )

This has only taken place after the 2nd service,before that I was geting 17-18 .
I would like you to do something which Is:
Test Your Car.
Do a Tank Full take her for a Long Drive In the morning ,say may be about 80-120 Kms, Its a
perfect driving condition.
Come back do a tank full then update us ,if the FE has gone up or not .

i have noticed this on inner ring road i speed up quite a bit and the fuel needle hardly moves so speed (upto 90 kmph) according to the manual is also a factor in improving FE
Time exceed so another post.
Zaks ECU is involved in FE we drive a MultiJet i.e., each engine cycle has multiple jets of fuel injection. Quantity and number of injections is controlled by the ECU.
Hence i think it is the ECU program that gives FE. I have heard advise on this forum to "re-map" the ECU to improve milage.
What that means technically no idea but better knowledge of ECU function might help me drive better.
One guess is that the older diesels that had a timing pump for fuel injection required a certain way of driving for decent economy ECU could assume that all drivers will drive like that and use this behavior to control fuel injection to deliver good milage. So when driving behavior changes from that ECU cannot adapt.
I guess both of us are saying the same point only i want to know why?
Its been 3 months since i bought the Palio multijet. The going has been fantastic and every time I take the car out I really enjoy driving it. Its due for the second service @ 7500KM. During the first service the Dealers didnt change the respective oils which they will in the second service. The car is rattle free and still feels and smells new. I bought the car and did the 1st service @ koyenco motors Calicut. They attended the car and was happy with the 1st service. They keep reminding me about my 2nd service too. Maybe by next month I can give the car for the second service.

I will write more on my experience with the Multijet. I am scheduled for a drive to Bangalore this Sunday and then to Chitradurga.Initially was planning to take my Amby Mark 4,but my wife decided against it so I will take the Fiat. Will write and post pictures as soon as I get back positively on Wednesday.

Had a fantastic drive from Manjeri to Chitradurga which is 600km one way.Got a steady average of 20kmpl. With 60% ac on. Posting pictures of the drive. Enjoy the Pictures.

WOW! is all i can say after seeing the pics. Specially the wildlife ones. And also the ones with the MJD of course! (how can that be missed). Now waiting to hear your travel experience and how the MJD behaved during the journey.
