@Steeroid: What your friend is looking forward to is a car that is comfortable along with 4 X 4 ability ( that is what I am able to make out from the post ). Now he also has considered Innova. This car is going to disappoint him. Considering that the suspension is built keeping in mind the pick up bed, it is bound to be stiff. With fewer passengers, expecting a change is ride quality is natural and this again will disappoint your friend. Ask him to look at safari or Scropio. |

Yes they are aftermarket as the OE is 205R16 with profile not written on them. I went to the showroom yesterday and was perplexed by the tyres as they don't have profile written on them. The tyres are marked as Tubeless Radials with 6 Ply Ratings. I always thought ply ratings were associated with Nylon Tyres and not with radials, correct me if I'm wrong. Can anyone please shed some light on this and educate |

They must be commercial vehicle tyres which usually use a different type of designation system like 10.20, 8.25-16, etc. where the first figure refers to the aspect (distance between the tyre's outer edge and rim's edge) while the second figure refers to rim size, all figures being in inches. Did the tyres have LT written on them? LT means light truck. |

Got this info from Dunlop UK website. The 205R16 are OE fitment for Hilux. the dimension given are as follows. Possible rim size: 5.5J -6.5J Maximum service width /diameter: 214/746 static radius +2% : 335 circumference +1.5% /-2.5% : 2230 approximately 29" rolling diameter [info from another site] So basically these are Uk spec tyre. I have never seen such spec even on commercial tyres in India. |
The standard tires for new Range Rover Classics were the dual purpose Michelin XMS 244 -- specially developed for the vehicle (see photo at left depicting author's XMS 244 with a rock penetrating the tread). The tire was pinned for studs, and its tall, narrow 205R16 size was better suited for use in mud and snow than the wide "flotation" sizes used for aggressive looks on most off-road vehicles. The narrow footprint sinks through the soft surface to grip the harder surface underneath. (Of course, in bottomless mud, nothing works). On the other hand, these tires are not optimized for soft sand, so airing down may be needed in those conditions to increase the ground contact area. All in all, this design gave remarkable all-round performance. In 1991, the Hunter model came with 205R16 Goodyear Wrangler tires -- also a dual purpose design. These still show up occasionally -- for example a shipment came into Atlantic British in 2004. |
