Have you tried varying the rpm? I have a feeling that 1500-2000rpm will give you a better mileage. At around 2300rpm a petrol motor will not be that fuel efficient. If you haven't tried; please check and let us know about the results.

It will definitely give better mileage, most likely by about 1 to 1.5 km more. But then, the speed is between 50 and 70 kmph and that is not the speed at which one typically drives in highways. I do have a plan to try out a mileage test at 70 kmph speed without AC, which probably will tell the best mileage that one can expect from a car. I am holding the plan for now as I need to take one (more) day off again. At this rate, I would visit Toyota service center more within a year than my visits to Hyundai service during 7 years of Santro ownership.

Lol. Didn't know that Dakshin Honda sells Toyotas. ;)

My bad stupid:

Nandi Toyota it is. Too much of car hunting I suppose.

Ravindu Toyota called me to say that car can be delivered in 4 weeks if booked now. They claim that there is a steep increase in production.

That is not good - the gear ratio is not set for FE and you'll have to live with this FE

My earlier car,the Versa used to run @2200rpm at 70kmph - a clear pointer to the reason behind the not-so-good FE 13.5-14kmpl

The Esteem used to be class on the FE front.

Have done just 3000kms and a passing car hit the right ORVM of my Etios. Though there are no visible signs of the hit on the outside of ORVM, but the mirror came out and broke!

Called up Nandi Toyota and they said that the mirror is available in stock and costs Rs 745!!! Thats too much for just the mirror! Yes does not include any assembly etc - just the mirror and a plastic frame around it! Initially thought of checking for the mirror at a roadside accessories shop but later decided to get it replaced by a genuine part. 745 for the part 85 for labor and then 14% tax added up to 945.

Pretty expensive spares I must say! Anyone else had any experience with Etios spares?

Btw, does anyone know of a shop (in Bangalore) where I could have got the mirror at a cheaper price?

Hi Upgrade, I have been following your excellent thread since beginning. I have just been granted the rights to participate on the forum, hence the delayed response.

Anyway, I have closely observed that my Etios does 2100 rpm at 80 kmph. Would you like to confirm / recheck your tacho reading?

Regards.

Congrats and welcome to team-bhp!

Are you sure about the rpm? You need to check from the driver's seat. If you see from the middle it will show lower RPM/speed. I'll try to take a snap some time later and place it. But given the quality issues Etios is having, I won't be surprised if different cars show different rpm.

^^Thanks Upgrade for the welcome. Yeah, the reading is from driver's seat. With a tiny dial and lack of adequate resolution markings, the tacho reading can't be exact at that speed (got to focus on the road too!). At the same time, it's more likely to be on the lower side of 2100 rpm than on the higher.

If quality, the Toyota USP, is an issue in Etios across the board, Toyota image will take a big hit. I am also trying to figure out as to what kind of quality issue could make the rpm readings so vastly different.

Here is the snap taken from mobile @80kmph.

As you can see, it is little less than 2500 rpm. Please check your car's @ 80kmph and post the picture if possible. I won't be surprised that this is the reason for the poor FE of my car.

^^I'm sure your reading is in 5th gear. Only this morning, I was observing engine rpm of a little above 2000 in my car at a speed of ~65 kmph in 4th gear and remembered you. Will try to post a pic.

W.r.t your high rpm, I am wondering if it's an issue of calibration of the tacho or something else of greater concern. Gurus can throw some light on this. I suggest you to take up afresh the specific rpm issue with the service centre / Toyota.

Hi Upgrade and RadiantKarma,

After reading your posts, I decided to check this on my Etios too. Results - Same as that of Radiant. Around 2100 rpms at 80kmph on 5th gear. I will post a pic soon and may be an online video on youtube too.

Having said this, my fuel efficiency isnt great. I get between 11-12 kmpl in city (Bangalore) with AC almost 50% of the time. Note that my drive is mostly on inner roads with a speed breaker every 800 m or so. So not a great test environment for calculating fuel economy.

Hi Upgrade. My Etios also gives a mileage of only 9 to 10 kmpl in city and around 12 in highways. The Odo reading is about 1170 kms. Can you please let us know your mileage now. (Seeing your previous posts, I guess you could have completed easily 5000 kms by now)

I have done 6700+ km and there is no change in mileage. I am using AC very less, about 20% only now due to relatively cool weather in Bangalore. I get around 11.5 kmpl in this condition. I am planning to give the car for 2nd service, this time to Ravindu in Old Madras Road. Let's see if they could crack any solution.
