I hope you were whistling when you crossed the 'Bridge on the River Kwai'... lolz (one of my all time favorites, as was Mandrake's Xanadu!)

Great thread BTW.

Colonel Bogeys March. A fine military tune indeed. A fine film too. Alec Guinness was a man typical of his type and milieu. Positively vertebral if you dont mind my saying so! Sadly in 2012, there are very few examples left, of such principled officers.

Great TL in the making doc. Thanks for the information about Kanchanaburi. We couldn't accommodate this in our trip last year. Planning one soon.

But this is a different museum - one that ought to interest men no end. Because, inside, you get to see bombshells and fast cars.

Some cars are so fast, they can jump over railway engines... -uh - not quite...

Now you must be eagerly waiting to take a good look at those bombshells? Okay, here goes...

Not satisfied? Not quite what you were looking for? All right, you'll have to make do with fast cars.

Thailand | Third Time-dsc02580k300.jpg

Actually there's more to it inside! Take you there in a while...

In the meanwhile, if someone's got deep pockets, there's always some WWII memorabilia that one can buy - paying in USD of course.
Thailand | Third Time-pay1.jpg

Oh, and can someone identify those old Mercs in the pics above? I'm no expert.

The site of the original Bridge on the River Kwai is inside the museum building. Here's a look...

More intricate artistic work, this time on soap. This chap was selling the carvings for 190THB, right alongside the museum. Impressive finish.

Just a fleeting thought: Any mention anywhere of the number of Indians who died during the making of the railway line (and of course its associated famous bridge)?

Re: Thailand | Third Time

Before we go back to the sumptuous lunch waiting for us back at the resort, it's time to take some random photographs of the River Kwai bridge - actually the 'fake' bridge, the real one having been blown to smithereens before the war ended.

Thailand | Third Time-bridge-1.jpg

Thailand | Third Time-bridge-2.jpg

The joyride train that tourists can take across the bridge is swankier and more modern now, than what it was 3 years ago.

Re: Thailand | Third Time

Sir, the whole day is glued to your travelogues (both this and the trips 1&2), this is now in my to-do list for tourism destination.

Thanks a lot for sharing loads of pictures and the information, I am particularly spell bound by the tigers and the elephant painting (wow).

Thanks, Balaji.

We had a good look at the tigers at the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi this time, but were not particularly planning to, or get to, see elephants!

On the way to the place...
Thailand | Third Time-tiger.jpg

Thailand | Third Time-tiger-1.jpg

Nothing much has changed, except that in 3 years, the entry fee has risen from 500THB to 600THB. But this applies to afternoon visits only.
Thailand | Third Time-tiger-2.jpg

The morning visits to the Tiger Temple are expensive - burn-a-hole-in-the-pocket-and-call-a-doctor kind of expensive. 5000 (yup, that's five thousand) Bahts. The posters describe what you get for your 5000THB in the morning.
Thailand | Third Time-tiger-3.jpg

Thailand | Third Time-tiger-4.jpg

Thailand | Third Time-tiger-5.jpg

The tigers were still there in the same old canyon, chained down like goats the same way, and we were going to take a better look at them this time than we did 3 years ago!
Thailand | Third Time-tiger-6.jpg

Tiger pics follow...

Tigers at the Tiger Temple Kanchanaburi. Your thoughts, interpretations, comments and remarks are welcome as always.

Touching tigers and getting your photo clicked. None of us was hurting any of them!

Tigers at play inside an enclosure. Apparently done to exercise the animals. Also noticed a professional video being shot of the same.

Though the bridge was immortalised by the film, he actual job was the building of the railway. And in that around a lac of civilian (forced) labourers died. A very large percentage of them were Indians (Tamilians). Something which is not mentioned at all (in the history written by winners) till you dig deep.

Where is the picture of you tweaking the tails of TWO tigers.

OT:- Can you sleep when your (TTT = tiger tail tweaking) friend is driving?
