Joy, I'm from Benaras and visit off and on. Your travelogue, so lucidly written interspersed with photographs, brought my childhood back - the narrow lanes, the pandas, the hot matar waale kachoris, Rabri-malai, the massive bulls blocking the way and what not.

Thank you for taking me back in time.

GD sir,
I just noticed your personal comment on this thread, and felt appropriate to pay my personal tribute to you, through this classic Bollywood song. It speaks so much of one of the three Rasas of Benaras... the Banarasi Paan, I think this is one of the things you must have grown up with!

I know it will bring a smile to your lips, wherever you are, and I wish you eternal peace, and your loved ones the strength and fortitude to bear your absence from this earth.

Re: Benaras: The Eternal City

Joy, Excellent travelogue, evocative of the beauty of Benares. I really do need to make the visit!
BTW if i am not mistaken you are an Ex Columban- if yes, we were classmates around 3 decades ago and we meet again through the pages of Team-BHP.

Nice write-up and photos. Reminds me of my own trip more than 5 years back.

Benares was never on my list, I got called there. A colleague who wanted to visit Benares, but did not know Hindi and did not prefer a packaged tour either, invited me to join. I refused twice, still he persisted. Am I thankful for that!

A once-in-a-lifetime experience even for a person who has been on countless spiritual trips. I can still remember the trip like it was yesterday.

Hoping to visit Benares again.
