Re: Magnificent Bhutan - The Lazy Man's Guide

Incredibly Beautiful Photographs! Thanks for sharing Ranjit.

But what permit are we talking about here?

Can someone who's been to both Bhutan as well as Ladakh dish out a mini comparo?

A permit to visit places other than Timphu and Paro. Here is how it works.

When you fly into Bhutan, you land at Paro. You can happily sightsee in Paro and Timphu without a permit but if you wish to explore further (which you will), you need a permit that is only issued at Timphu which is an hour away from Paro.

Most flights from India land at Paro by early afternoon. The best approach is to fly into Paro, leave for Timphu and enjoy the evening there. You then land up at the permit issuing office by 9am the next day, fill out a form mentioning every place you intend to see (do ask the for advice if you are not sure). People usually get the permits within an hour or two. It is a fairly pain free process.

There are check-posts along the way where permits are checked.

The great news about Ladakh is that Indian citizens no longer need Permits. I'm not sure of the situation on the ground though

Bhutan is truly a wonderful place and you have captured it in camera as best a human could! Such a clean place makes me wish India would try to emulate them when it comes to preserving ecological balance.

Thank you for the wonderful, informative travelogue!
