Bangalore to Malnad Drive

A drive was long overdue and wanted a reason to head out. Hectic work ensured the urge was getting stronger by the day. During a tea break at office, overnighter team outing was being discussed. Suggested Jenu Kallu Retreat and people agreed. All the office folks wanted to travel together, but I wanted to drive. August 7th was fixed as the date and all logistics were ready. I had a plan of driving further and returning on Sunday with the intent of just driving around the Malenad region with rain giving company.

7th August 2015

Started at 6 am and met the rest of the folks at the Hassan highway turn off near Nelamangala. Breakfast was planned at Swathi Delicacy.

Continued via Salakeshpur and took the Hanbal route to reach Jenu Kallu Retreat by lunchtime. Had a sumptuous lunch and relaxed a bit while it was raining all the while. A couple of team activities over the evening and called it a day.

At the breakfast point

8th August 2015

The previous day we had planned a small trek near the resort and it about an hour and a half to go to the peak and return. A couple of pics from the top.

Soon after breakfast, I departed and drove towards Mudigere with the destination being Horanadu. The roads leading up to Mudigere were narrow and broken at a few places. Leisurely drove all along and reached Horanadu by 1 pm. A quick visit to the temple was followed by the lunch at Temple. Next destination was Agumbe, decided to drive through Kudremukh and Sringeri to reach Agumbe.

A few pics enroute

re: Bangalore to Malnad Drive

9th August 2015

Got up early, visited the Murudeshwar temple and quickly drove to Idagunji. A brisk visit to the temple was followed by a heavy breakfast.

Now drove towards Jog Falls via Honnavar. All was well until one an over enthusiastic i20 guy slid off the road in the ghat section and was destined to hit the Linea head on. However, I managed to get off the road, in the process running over a big lime stone. This ensure a punctured sidewall and a cracked windshield. Pulled over, swapped the puncture wheel with the spare and drove on.

Beautiful roads between Sagara and Shimoga

After the Jog visit, drove to Bangalore with a couple of breaks (one for refueling at Shimoga and snacks at Preeti Canteen Birur). Reach home at 9 pm.

Trip Stats

Distance covered – 1079.8 kms

Overall Mileage – 21.4 kmpl

Driving time – 23 hours and 53 mins

Short and sweet travelogue of Malenad during rainy days. Absolute splendor, serene, beautiful and no adjectives can describe the places in Malenad. Excellent pictures nkrishnap to bring out the beauty

Tempting to plan a visit during monsoon.

Rainy season, smooth roads and a driver's car (Linea) = the perfect recipe for a long drive .

Wondering how the windshield cracked. Did the i20 guy crash or just lost control for a wee bit. It hurts when your car is damaged due to some foolish driver on the road. Thank god those beautiful alloys of your car weren't harmed.

21.4KMPL overall fuel efficiency from 1079.8KMs drive via various terrains including inclines? Wow!

Serene and inviting place. Glad to see many empty road stretches in your pics. Click of that artificial fall has come out really well.

The windshield crack was something like a stress fracture. Luckily the alloys were unharmed, no bend too.

The i20 guy ran off the road on the wrong side and got back to the road and scooted off.

21.4 kmpl was for the full trip (tankful to tankful method) which included a good 50% of winding roads. The key here is no hard acceleration and maintaining speeds of 90-100 kmph wherever possible.
